NWS Forecasts Winter Storm 11/4/2025

Dear Parents & Guardians,

The National Weather Service has forecasted a storm system moving into Del Norte County this evening, Tuesday, November 4, continuing through Wednesday, November 5. The storm is expected to bring heavy rain, strong south winds, downed trees, and possible power outages.

While we can’t predict the full impact of the weather, we will follow our standard winter storm protocol: All schools are planned to remain open on their usual schedules, even in the event of a power outage—as long as roads remain open and food services can be provided.

In the event of an outage, families should stay tuned to local radio KCRE 94.3 for school updates.

We appreciate your cooperation and patience. Please be assured that our top priority remains the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep you informed of any changes.

Winter Storm and Inclement Weather FAQ

1. How is the decision made to close or delay schools during severe weather?
We coordinate closely with the Del Norte County Office of Emergency Services, California Highway Patrol, and Caltrans, and base our decisions on actual conditions at school sites (road access, facility safety, food delivery).

  • We will review weather, road, and power conditions each morning at 5:00 AM.

  • If conditions are significantly impacted (e.g., major road closures, impassable routes, food services cannot be provided), there may be a late start or early dismissal at some schools.

  • On a route-by-route basis, some bus services may be canceled if they are deemed unsafe.

  • If early release is required, supervision will be provided on campus until your child is picked up by a parent, guardian, or emergency contact.

2. How will we communicate with families?

  • If school closure, delay, or early release becomes necessary, families will be notified via phone call, text message, and email.

  • Announcements will also be posted on our website (DNUSD.org) and on our Facebook page.

  • In the event of a power outage, stay tuned to local radio (e.g., KCRE 94.3 FM) for updates.

  • When possible, decisions will be communicated by 5:30 a.m. on the affected morning.

3. What if I can’t transport my child because of road closures or unsafe travel?

  • Please notify your school’s office as soon as possible if you are unable to get your child to school.

  • We will make arrangements and ensure your child’s supervision until such time as they can safely arrive or be picked up.

4. How should I prepare my child for school during the storm?

  • Please have your child wear warm layers, rain gear, and sturdy footwear appropriate for wet and windy conditions.

  • Ensure their jacket, hood or rain-coat is packed and easily accessible.

5. How can you prepare at home for an emergency or power outage?

  • Review and update your child’s emergency contact information with their school, if needed.

  • Establish a plan for pickup and early release scenarios.

  • Ensure devices are charged and alternate arrangements (phone, radio) are available for communication.
