Schools to Remain Open - National Weather Service High Wind Warning 11/19/2024

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The National Weather Service has issued a HIGH WIND WARNING effective from Tuesday, November 19, at 4:00 PM, until Wednesday, November 20, at 2:00 AM. Heavy rain and strong south winds of 25 to 45 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph, are expected across Del Norte County.

Schools will remain open if roads are open and food can be prepared and delivered. The forecasted weather conditions pose potential challenges, including downed trees, power lines, and power outages. Landslides may also impact travel.

Please review the following FAQ detailing protocols during bad weather: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-brhL3Enln44UJdWUNEhNN0OZf02K2j0O3xLqlgGVxk/edit?usp=sharing

1. How is the decision made to close school during severe inclement weather?
The decision to close schools is based on recommendations from the Office of Emergency Services, CalTrans, the California Highway Patrol, and actual impacts to our school facilities and the safety of students and staff.  Schools will generally remain open if roads are open and meals can be prepared and delivered to schools.

In the event of severe inclement weather:

  • Weather and road conditions will be reviewed each morning at 5:00 AM.
  • Students at outlying schools or schools significantly impacted may begin late or be dismissed earlier, depending on conditions.
  • In more severe instances, one or more bus routes may be canceled.

In the event that schools release early, supervision will be provided at those locations until students are picked up by a parent, guardian, or emergency contact.

2. How will communication be sent to families?

  • School Closures: Families will be notified via phone, text, email, and local radio. Announcements will also be posted on our website at DNUSD.org and on Facebook.  When possible, announcements will be made by 5:30 AM.
  • During a power outage, stay informed by tuning in to KCRE 94.3 FM radio. The District will also send emails, text messages, and phone notifications whenever possible.

3. What if I can’t get my child to school due to road closures?
If road closures prevent you from taking your child to school, please notify the school office as soon as possible, and arrangements will be made.

4. How should I prepare my child for school during bad weather?
When attending school during severe inclement weather, ensure your child is dressed appropriately, including warm clothing, rain gear, and appropriate footwear.

5.  What can I do to prepare for an emergency?

To ensure that you receive accurate, up-to-date information and that you are contacted in the event of an emergency, you should review and, if necessary, update your child’s emergency contacts by contacting your child’s school.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during these challenging weather conditions. Rest assured, we are closely monitoring the situation and working with our local partners to prioritize the safety and well-being of students and staff.
