Good afternoon, I’m Jeff Harris, Superintendent for Del Norte Schools, and this is the update for the week of January 6, 2025.
Dates to Remember
Welcome back! I hope your winter break was rejuvenating and that you had some time to relax. As we dive back into school, there are several important dates I'd like to remind you of in the coming weeks. First, schools will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2025, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Later that same week, on Thursday, January 23, and Friday, January 24, our high school students in grades 9 through 12 will be on minimum days to accommodate finals and the end of the semester. Looking ahead to next February, please note that there will be no school Friday, February 14 or Monday, February 17, in recognition of Presidents’ Day Weekend.
Sister City Rikuzentakata Visit
This week, we are welcoming students and delegates from our sister city, Rikuzentakata. This deep relationship was formed in the wake of the 2011 tsunami, which impacted both of our communities. In Rikuzentakata, the tsunami destroyed much of the town, tragically claiming the lives of almost one tenth of the city’s population and destroying homes, while our own harbor suffered millions of dollars in damages and the waves claimed the life of a local resident. In the middle of this tragedy, the story of Kamome emerged—a small boat that traveled from Rikuzentakata to our shores, becoming a beacon of resilience and unity. This symbol of shared experience and recovery has deeply connected our communities. The upcoming visit, which follows months of correspondence between our students and the students of Takata High, promises a rich cultural exchange. It offers a unique opportunity for both communities to learn from each other, deepen our relationship, and continue growing together. This experience will undoubtedly enrich our students and our broader community, reinforcing the bonds of friendship and mutual support forged by shared challenges.
DNHS Sports Update
Finally, our Warriors student-athletes were hard at work over the winter break! Both the wrestling and basketball teams competed in games and matches, showcasing their dedication and skills. We’re proud of their commitment and look forward to seeing more great performances as the season continues.
This week in Warriors sports, we’re gearing up for an action-packed schedule. Tomorrow, Tuesday, January 7th, our Girls’ Basketball teams will take on Arcata at Del Norte High, with games starting at 4:30 PM. On Wednesday, the Boys’ Basketball teams will travel to Arcata for their games, also starting at 4:30 PM. Thursday brings more home action as the Girls’ JV and Varsity Basketball teams host McKinleyville with games starting at 6:00 PM.
Friday kicks off a busy weekend, with the Boys’ Basketball teams traveling to McKinleyville for games starting at 4:30 PM. Meanwhile, Girls’ Wrestling will head to Eureka High for matches, and the Varsity Boys’ Wrestling team will compete in a tournament at Memorial Coliseum. On Saturday, the JV Boys’ Wrestlers will also head to Eureka High for their matches. Match start times are yet to be determined. We wish all our Warriors teams the best of luck this week!
