The latest superintendents Message 11-18-2024

Good afternoon, I’m Jeff Harris, Superintendent of Schools for Del Norte County, and this is the update for the week of November 18, 2024.

Dates to Remember

First, I’d like to remind everyone that next week is Thanksgiving break, which begins Monday, November 25, and goes through Friday, November 29.  School will resume on Monday, December 2.
Sea-to-Market Project: Fish Tacos for ALL Students

Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 19, fish tacos will be served to students at all district and county schools thanks to the Sea-to-Market Project.

The Sea-to-Market Project delivers fresh, locally caught seafood to Del Norte County students, fostering healthy eating habits and supporting the local fishing industry. In collaboration with the Del Norte Commercial Fisherman’s Marketing Association and the Community Food Council, the program provides all students in the county with fresh seafood through fish taco lunches prepared by DNUSD Nutrition Services. By sourcing locally, the initiative reduces carbon footprints and emphasizes the quality of sustainable fish.

This program not only improves school meals but also supports the local fishing fleet, both of which showcase the program’s reach and commitment to providing fresh, nutritious meals.

DNHS Madrigal Dinner

Tickets are now on sale for Del Norte High School Music Program’s annual Madrigal Dinner, happening one night only on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024, at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Crescent City. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the performance begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $30 per person, available at Del Norte Office Supply, payable by cash or check made out to DNHS Music Boosters, and must be purchased in advance. Guests will choose from three entrees, Stuffed Pork Loin Roast, Marry Me Chicken, or Roast Butternut Squash Risotto with Sage. The event features Renaissance-era music, costuming, theater, and a royal feast, directed by DNHS Choir Director Collin Kirkwood, showcasing the talents of the music program’s students. Tables can be reserved for groups of six; otherwise, seating is first-come/first-served. Don't miss this magical holiday tradition—get your tickets today!

DNHS Sports Update

I’d like to start this week’s sports update by congratulating our Warriors Varsity Football team on their hard-fought 13-12 victory against Kelseyville on Friday night, earning them a spot in the Division 7 Semifinals! This Friday, they’ll travel to Hayward to take on Moreau Catholic High School. The game kicks off at 7:00 PM, and tickets must be purchased online.

This Friday and Saturday, the Boys’ Basketball season kicks off with the Warriors Freshmen team competing in a tournament in Eureka. Finally, on Saturday, our Cross Country team heads to Hayward for the NCS Championship meet.

Good luck this week, Warriors!

Final Reminders

I do want to let you know that the National Weather Service and the Office of Emergency Services have announced that beginning tomorrow and continuing through Wednesday, we are forecast to experience very heavy rain and strong wind that could cause downed trees and power outages.  Please plan accordingly.  If there are any impacts to school operations, we will get information out through our website, Facebook, phone and/or text messages and radio announcements.

Finally, due to the Thanksgiving holiday, there will be no school board meeting next week or Monday update.

That’s all for this week.  Thank you.
