Update to the Community 2/3/2025
Good afternoon, I’m Jeff Harris, Superintendent of Schools for Del Norte, and this is the update for the week of February 3, 2025.
Dates to Remember
I’d like to start by reminding you that there will be no school on Friday, February 14, or Monday, February 17, in honor of Lincoln’s Birthday and Presidents’ Day.
Winter Weather
We are also looking at the potential of some extreme weather over the next two days. The National Weather Service is expecting wet and cold weather, including the very slight possibility of low-elevation snow in Del Norte County. Please remember that schools will remain open as long as roads are drivable and meals can be delivered. However, if schools do close or if transportation is affected, we will contact you by phone, text, and email, and as always, we will provide updates to KCRE 94.3 FM or KPOD 97.9 FM. We ask that you keep your child’s emergency contacts current and ensure that they’re dressed for winter weather. We’ll continue to monitor conditions and keep you informed of any impacts to school. If road closures prevent you from safely bringing your child to school, please notify the school office as soon as you’re able.
Poetry Out Loud Competition
This Wednesday at 6:00 PM at Crescent Elk Middle School, DNACA will be hosting the Del Norte County Poetry Out Loud competition. This event brings together high school students from across Del Norte County to showcase their talent and passion for spoken word. This annual event, part of a national program, encourages students to engage with classic and contemporary poetry through memorization and performance. It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the power of language and the creativity of our local youth. We invite the community to come out and support these dedicated students as they bring poetry to life.
See Something, Say Something - Tip Line
As a community, we all play a role in keeping our schools safe. There are times when serious concerns arise—whether it's a safety threat, a student in crisis, or something that just doesn't seem right. That’s why we’re asking for your help. If you see or hear something concerning, please take a moment to report it through our confidential tip line at dnusd.org/tip or through the tip icon on the DNUSD app. Your awareness and willingness to speak up make a real difference in protecting our students and staff. Together, we can ensure that our schools remain a safe and supportive place for everyone. See something, say something, you can make a difference.
