  • Monday Update to the Community 5-9-2022

Good Afternoon, I’m Jeff Harris, Superintendent of Schools for Del Norte County, and welcome to our regular Monday Update.

    Educator Appreciation Month

Our Board recently adopted a resolution naming May Educator Appreciation Month, and this Wednesday, May 11, California celebrates Day of the Teacher. This week, we’re focusing on and honoring instructional excellence in our public schools and the impact it has on our students. Thank you teachers for all that you do.  We also want to remember to thank all of our certificated staff.  From counselors and school psychologists to school nurses and other service providers, certificated staff provides services for our students to help them get the most out of their time in school.

    LCAP Community Input Survey

I want to remind everyone, too, that our LCAP Community Input Survey will remain open for a few more days before it closes this Friday. The LCAP is the Local Control & Accountability Plan, which details how specific state funds will be spent to benefit students who are homeless, receiving foster youth services, or are English learners.  Many of the items in the LCAP, such as counseling, transportation, district preschool, and music, among others, also serve all students.

The survey is designed to get your input, whether you are a staff member, parent, or community member, about how our district should prioritize its needs and focus its efforts over the course of the next few years. It should take less than five minutes to complete. If you are interested in taking this survey, you can find it posted below this update on our website or at dnsud.org/lcap.

    Early Childhood Education Steam Fair

Our annual early childhood education steam fair is this weekend. Families with children ages 0-5 are invited to attend on Saturday, May 14th, between 10 AM and 2 PM in the main building of the Fairgrounds. It is free for families, and children will be able to participate in science, technology, engineering, art, and math activities in a variety of booths. We encourage you to come out and participate with your child.  You can also register your child for preschool, transitional kindergarten, or kindergarten during the fair.

    Sports Update

As for upcoming home athletic events, the Del Norte High Varsity Baseball team plays tomorrow, May 10, at 3 PM against Arcata. Since this is a home game, it will be live-streamed. You can find out more about all upcoming athletic events at dnhigh.org under “student activities''.

That's it for this week’s update, we hope you have a great week, and we’ll see you next Monday.

    Thank you

    Summer Programs

Last year we had a very successful summer program and we are looking forward to doing it again this year. However, the state has changed a few of the requirements and we are in the process of developing a program that meets those requirements. If everything goes according to plan, we should be opening registration for the program very soon. If you are interested in signing up your child, please keep an eye out for that information on our website, APP, and our future Monday Updates.
