Budget Overview

Return to top of page

As a school district enters late spring, the annual budget process simultaneously wraps up the current year’s budget and prepares for the upcoming one. District leaders assess needs, project enrollment, and estimate revenue sources, culminating in a proposed budget that outlines how funds are allocated for staffing, student programs, and operations in the upcoming fiscal year (based on the previous year’s data). The School Board discusses the proposed budget in hearings and workshops, considers feedback from the community, and reviews any new information—such as revised state funding estimates—leading to potential revisions before official adoption (commonly by June 30). Once the new fiscal year begins, the District monitors finances through interim reports, updating projections with real-time revenue and expense data. At year-end, the books are closed and unaudited actuals are produced; an external audit then finalizes the audited actuals, confirming how funds are ultimately used.

Budgets are created at the district level. They are then brought to the Board for final decisions/approvals/denials for all budgets throughout the district.

Engagement Opportunities

  • What is the LCAP?
The Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) is a three-year plan that outlines how our district will use state funding to support student success. It is designed to improve outcomes for all students, with a focus on equity and closing achievement gaps. The LCAP is developed with input from parents, students, staff, and community members, making it an essential opportunity for public engagement in district decision-making.

  • How to participate and get more information
    • LCAP Meetings:
Parents and community members are encouraged to take part in our LCAP meetings, which are held regularly via Zoom. These meetings provide an opportunity to give feedback and help shape how district resources support student success. To view the meeting schedule and learn more, visit DNUSD.org/LCAP.
    • Board Meetings:
While board meetings are not a place for a back and forth conversation between the public and the board, it gives an excellent opportunity for community members to provide feedback through public comment. You can find the board meeting agendas by visiting DNUSD.org/agenda.
