In 1897 a one room school house was built on two and half acres of land donated by the Wakefield family. It was named Pine Grove School and served the territory for over fifty years. The original school house burned down and was rebuilt. As enrollment increased more buildings were built. In 1951, a contract was signed with Crescent Elk so that 7th and 8th grade students could attend there. During this time the school board members, John Wells, Mervin McLaughlin and Richard Reneau determined more land was needed in order to expand the school. A bond was issued and a State School Building loan was approved. A modern school was constructed and all existing buildings were torn down. In time Pine Grove Elementary School would go on to join the Del Norte Unified School District.
