  • Virtual Learning Interest Form

In May, approximately 10% of survey respondents indicated that they would prefer an optional virtual learning program for their child or children, if offered, for the 2020-2021 school year. This packet explains some of the potential opportunities, expectations, and considerations around a virtual learning program. If you are considering the possibility of virtual learning for your child, please review the information flyer attached below for additional information. This program is conceptual as of now and we are in the process of gathering more information and determining the level of interest from our families.

  • School Re-Opening Survey
    Spanish Survey Link: https://forms.gle/yQfLTyfpYUSd5YbB8
    English Survey Link: https://forms.gle/xmC6PTNfTsZoPwZo6

Due to restrictions and health recommendations for school reopening for the 2020-2021 academic year, the District is anticipating only being able to have 1/2 of our students in attendance at any given time, when school facilities are open. We have also heard from some of our families that they would prefer a fully online learning model.

DNUSD Staff has been discussing options and working together to identify the best way to ensure that we continue to educate our students and provide them with the supports that they need to the fullest extent possible. By completing this survey, you will be helping us to more fully understand the system that works best for you and your child, as well as barriers that need to be addressed as we move toward opening our schools next year.

We understand that this survey is lengthy, but your opinions and ideas are very important to us. Thank you, in advance, for your time and thoughtfulness in answering the following questions.

The survey is designed for general feedback from all families. Families of high school and middle school students may receive additional opportunities to provide feedback on those programs.

  • Virtual Learning Program Flyer Correction Letter

Today, a message was posted on the DNUSD webpage and Facebook page regarding the Del Norte Virtual Learning Program flyer. On behalf of the District, I would like to personally apologize for any misunderstanding regarding this post.

Results from the 1st Remote Learning Survey:
    https://drive.google.com/…/1i3zOozC2E1A-U22SY9yXODyfAY…/view

I would like to clarify the following:
    1. The District is not planning on only offering online learning for the 2020-2021 school year. At this point, we are expecting to be able to return with at least 50% of our students in attendance on campus at any given time. Del Norte Unified School District will open schools in the traditional format that we have always done if we are permitted to by Local and State Departments of Public Health. In a previous survey, 65% of our families indicated that they would prefer that school be offered fully in person, as we have always done, while an additional 25% indicated that they would prefer a blended learning model.

    2. That same survey indicated that approximately 10% of our families expressed an interest in participating only in online or distance learning. In order to move forward with determining whether this option is viable, it is necessary that we get an accurate count of students, by grade level and school of residence, as quickly as possible. This “application” was designed as a way to get this information for planning purposes only.

    3. I have been meeting with the leadership of the Del Norte Teachers’ Association and the local California School Employees Association on a steering committee to discuss issues and options in reopening for 2020-2021. We have discussed the desire and survey results for an online program, but no discussion has been held regarding this “application” or a final configuration of an online program.

    4. We are in the process of completing a survey for all district staff and families to gather additional information regarding the three reopening options that the steering committee, site principals, and other consulting groups have discussed: an in-person AM/PM model with 50% of students in attendance at either session, a two day per week in-person model with 50% of students in attendance 2 days each week with distance learning occurring during days when they are not receiving in-person instruction, and the distance learning-only model.

    5. Given the confusion caused by the post and the need to more accurately reflect the intent of the form, we will be revising the current document and reposting it so that it better meets its intended purpose. To avoid continuing confusion, we will “expire” the post, so that only the corrected version is available. The updated document will be available in Spanish, as well.

I would, again, like to apologize for any confusion that these posts may have caused. In an attempt to gather information quickly, we did not communicate clearly or adequately. We have just over 40 days in which to rethink 100 years of educational structure and respond to the most significant health crisis in recent history, prior to the start of the school year. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we move through this process.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 464-0200.

    Jeff Harris
    Superintendent

  • DNUSD Graduation 2020

What a great time of year! We have been able to celebrate a variety of moving up ceremonies, promotion ceremonies, and graduations this week, cheering on students from a number of grades and at every school. Even in these strange and trying times, families, school staff, and the community have stood by the youth of our county and have helped to make these celebrations special.

Over the past few days, seniors from Sunset, Community School, and Castle Rock have participated in their graduation ceremonies, as well. All of these ceremonies, as you may know, were variations on the locally and state-approved drive through graduation model. Tonight DNHS seniors will also graduate using the same model. Over the past month, high school and district administration and the Board of Trustees have worked hard to push for our graduations to be as traditional as possible, but we were not allowed to move forward. Our high school staff continued to develop two full graduation plans in the event that an in-person graduation was allowed. Yesterday the effort continued. Supervisor Chris Howard worked with Senator Mike McGuire and Dr. Rehwaldt to get our plan to state officials for a one-time approval. Despite everyone’s best efforts, I was informed yesterday at 1:20 pm that the California Department of Public Health had denied our request to hold our graduation in person.

While we are looking forward to celebrating this milestone in our students’ lives, we also want to acknowledge the fact that, for the first time in 25 years, DNHS seniors will not be allowed to graduate in our football stadium, and we as a district and a community will not be able to share this moment in that space. Tonight, when you drive through, you will see two sets of 20 chairs, representing the class of 2020, set up on the 50-yard line as a silent reminder of opportunities that have been lost in the pandemic.

Although we will not be holding graduation in person, we encourage you to cheer on our graduates as you see them receive their diplomas, to tune in to watch the graduation Livestream and to let them know how much they mean to us, all.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and district staff, we wish every student all the best and success in their next adventures in life and education!

  • Remote Learning Survey 6-3-2020

    Parents and Guardians,

Our District is partnering with BrightBytes to learn more about how our community is responding to teaching and learning remotely. We want to hear how you and your child(ren) are adjusting during this unprecedented time and learn how the district can better support you.

We are asking students in grades 3-12, as well as all teachers, principals, and parents / guardians to provide input on this survey. The survey will take no more than 5-10 minutes to complete. If you have children in more than one school, please complete the survey for each child.

Your participation is crucial in providing a comprehensive understanding of how we can improve support for you and your student(s) during this time.

We will be collecting survey responses from June 3 - June 10. Below is the URL to access our district survey landing page. Once there, select the Parent survey and then select your school from the drop-down menu.

Del Norte Unified School District URL: https://bbyt.es/start/RX7VV8RCQ

If you have questions or run into any difficulty, please contact Michael Hawkins at mhawkins@dnusd.org

Thank you so much for quickly providing this critical information. We want to do everything we can to ensure you and your student(s) are successful during this time. We appreciate you!

We need help from the community to gather the information that will inform our planning for school options for the 20-21 school year. Completing this survey will help us better serve families of Del Norte County. Please answer the questions below based on students in your home for the 20-21 school year. All options would follow the state and local guidelines for health and safety. Three school model options will be presented in this survey. The school district would like to know which you would prefer for your children if all three options were available in the fall.

DNUSD Responds to New State Guidelines Regarding School Closures

This week, we heard from both the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Governor that, in their opinion, schools will not re-open facilities to students for the remainder of the academic year. Many people around the state have taken these statements out of context or have misinterpreted what was said.

Neither the Governor nor State Superintendent said that schools were closed. What they said was they did not anticipate sending students back to traditional school sites. Both made it very clear that, while school facilities were closed to students, teaching and the educational process is expected to continue. Additional guidance was sent by the State Superintendent late last night, which further clarified that distance teaching and learning, including feedback and grading to a certain extent, are mandated by the state and that local school districts, in consultation with staff, need to determine how high school students could continue to accrue credits. Some examples were systems of pass/fail, credit/no credit, A-D grades (no failing), modified A-C grades (again, no failing), online classes with credits attached, etc.

We need to be clear that schools are not closed. School facilities are. Between the initial closure of facilities on March 16 and the Friday before Spring Break, April 10, staff have been training for and planning to move to distance learning for all students. If facilities remain closed after April 20, teaching, learning, and family engagement will occur for all K-12 students using distance learning.

The Board will discuss and take action on lengthening the facilities closure on Thursday, April 9. I anticipate that, given recommendations by the California Department of Public Health, the Governor’s Office, the State Superintendent, and CDC, the Board will take action on Thursday to formalize facilities closure through the end of the current school year.

Between our students, their families, District employees and their families, and the services that we provide to the community, such as our Seamless Meals program, schools in our county directly touch the lives of over half of our county’s population. Our pledge to the community is that we will provide high quality educational opportunities to our students, that we will continue to provide meals to youth ages 0-18, and that we will provide childcare to support our health care workers and the institutions that keep our community healthy.

Thank you for working with all of our staff in their various roles through this abrupt transition, and please know that we look forward to working even more closely with our students and their families as we turn to the next chapter of education during these unparalleled times.

  • DNUSD Press Release Regarding State Superintendent Tony Thurmond's Comments on School Closures

    4-1-2020 @ 3:30 pm

Yesterday afternoon, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond issued a letter to all county superintendents indicating his belief that school facilities should remain closed to students for the remainder of this school year "due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing." This letter was quickly publicized and was followed today by a press conference held by Governor Newsom where he supported Superintendent Thurmond's position and said, "I believe it is, I think, self-evident that we should not prepare to bring our children back into the school setting." The Del Norte Unified School District Board of Trustees is scheduled to discuss the potential reopening of schools, based on the decision that was previously made on March 15th, at their next board meeting. Given CDC guidelines on social distancing and the additional guidance by the State Superintendent and Governor, it is very likely that school facilities will not reopen to students for the remainder of this school year but that instruction will move exclusively to a distance learning environment.

It is also very important to remember that although facilities are closed to students, instruction is still happening. As Governor Newsom said in today's press conference, "Schools aren't open, but classes are in." Our teachers are engaged in creating distance learning opportunities that can be tailored to students' needs, and other certificated employees, such as nurses, counselors, and other service providers are continuing to reach out to students and families. Our classified staff continue to ensure our campuses are maintained, to guarantee that food is provided to our students, and to make certain that payroll and other essential functions are maintained. In addition, principals, directors, and other district and county office staff are ensuring that all facets of our district operations move forward, meeting the needs of our students, our employees, and our community.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and our administrative leadership team, I'd like to thank our community for your support during this transition and ask that you let us know if there is any way that we can help your child or family during this unprecedented time.

To view today's press conference, please visit: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=710485322821506. For family or student resources or more information on the District's response to the COVID-19 situation, please visit www.dnusd.org/covid-19.

    School Closure Announcement

    [ENGLISH]

The School Board unanimously voted today to close all Del Norte Unified District schools, which includes all District operated preschools, and the County Superintendent authorized the closure of schools operated by the Del Norte County Office of Education. This does not include any educational program not operated by the District or County Office, including Uncharted Shores Academy, private schools, or preschools not operated by the District. District and County school closure will be effective immediately with schools closing to students from Monday, March 16 through April 10. Spring Break will remain as scheduled on April 13-17. School will resume as planned on Monday, April 20.

The District will continue to provide the seamless meals program, ensuring that all children, ages 0-18, will have access to free breakfast and lunch in a drive-through or take and go model. The District will also work with providers to determine support for students with IEPs, students with health-related services, and students who receive mental health supports.

District teachers will also be working with their site administration to create enrichment and educational opportunities that can be used by parents and students while they are home during this time. During the closure, attendance is not taken, work is not considered independent study (and therefore not required) and all school co- and extracurricular events are canceled.

We understand that school closures have a profound effect on students and the community as a whole. Our goal is to ultimately help protect the health of our students, families, and communities so that we can resume and normalize operations as soon as possible.

  • COVID-19 Update : Thur., Feb. 27 2020

    Dear Del Norte Unified Parents/Guardians,

As we have since January 24, we want to continue to provide you with the latest information about the coronavirus. As of today, the risk for contracting the coronavirus remains low, and there are no cases in Del Norte County. Unlike in other countries, there is no community transmission in the United States. Yesterday afternoon, President Trump and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) held a press conference to address concerns and provide an update. The President said the risk is “very low” but added that schools and communities should be prepared “just in case.” You can watch the entire press conference here

The CDC remarked that its early containment strategies have been successful, and as a result, there has only been one new case in the United States in the past two weeks and still no community spread. The CDC did advise that it does expect more cases in the United States and that communities should be prepared. Del Norte Unified staff members have continued to be in contact with doctors and officials from the Del Norte County Department of Health and Human Services and other local leaders. In addition to regular contact with the Department of Health and Human Services and other county and state agencies, Del Norte Unified staff are in close contact with other Districts across California in order to effectively monitor the spread of this virus. We are very pleased with the communications, support, and guidance we have received from Del Norte Health and Human Services and our other local and state agencies, and are confident this will continue.

As a reminder, if your child is sick, please keep them home from school. To help prevent the spread of illness, follow these important tips:

    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
    • Stay home when you are sick
    • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
    • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces

We are still updating our dedicated Coronavirus webpage with new resources, press briefings, and news articles, along with all of our previous communications. Our top priority is the health and safety of our students and staff, and we take this responsibility very seriously. Our staff already have begun taking precautions by implementing safe practices across DNUSD schools in order to maintain sanitary facilities for our staff and students.

    Thank you

  • COVID-19 Update : Tue., Feb. 25 2020

Recently, DNHS has received calls regarding the potential for DNHS students returning from Japan carrying the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The District has been in contact with the Del Norte Department of Public Health, which was fully aware of the travel, and the Department confirmed that the risk for COVID-19 is low in Del Norte and that no cases have been confirmed. Public Health does encourage:

    • Avoiding contact with sick people
    • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands;
    • Cleaning your hands often by washing them with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at 60%–95% alcohol. Soap and water should be used if hands are visibly dirty; and
    • Most importantly, cleaning hands after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.

For the purpose of clarification regarding the DNHS trip to Japan, the outbreak of COVID-19 was primarily of concern on mainland China at the time students and staff left Crescent City for Japan. Parents and administrators did have meetings prior to departure to discuss the trip, including recommendations, form the State Department of Health and CDC for international travel. Families also met with a nurse to discuss universal precautions, how to clean surfaces, how to wash hands, and how to properly wear masks. According to Mr. Fugate, the students were diligent in this effort during the entire trip.

After the DNHS group departed, however, news concerning the virus continued to develop. On or about February 19, after students departed, the Center for Disease Control identified Japan as a Watch- Level 1, which remained in effect through the time of return of DNHS students and did not recommend canceling or postponing travel. They did recommend that travelers take basic precautions, such as washing hands and not being in close contact with sick people. On Saturday, February 22, after the return of students, the CDC changed the designation to Alert- Level 2, adding to previous recommendations that older adults and those with chronic health issues should consider postponing travel.

At no time did the Department of State, CDC, or the State of California recommend or enforce quarantine for those traveling from Japan.

  • COVID-19 Update : Fri., Feb. 21 2020

Del Norte Public Health and Del Norte Office of Emergency Services (OES) are aware of the news from Humboldt County yesterday, of a confirmed case of COVID-19 and one other suspect case identified in Humboldt County. As has been done elsewhere for other cases in California, the news report confirms that monitoring and isolation procedures are in place for these persons. We would like to reassure Del Norte residents that we DO NOT have any cases here, and the risk remains low for the general public of either county. It is encouraging news that the persons involved have not been affected to the point of requiring hospitalization.

The COVID-19 virus (the Wuhan coronavirus) has been alarming to all, in part because of the intense media coverage of this event. The virus, however, is considered to be a mild infection over 80% of the time, and the persons who are becoming severely ill are usually those who are most likely to get pneumonia, such as the elderly and chronically ill-even among those persons, people are likely to recover completely. The overall risk of dying from this infection is very low, currently estimated at 2-3%. Many experts in the field believe that the true risk is actually much lower.

The best measures for protection for when or if the COVID-19 virus reaches the general population is the same for FLU-cover sneezes and coughs, wash hands, wash surfaces in your homes such as doorknobs and faucet handles, and stay home when you are sick-all common-sense measures that work to prevent or delay transfer of germs of all kinds. We all should be doing these things all the time during flu season if you are not, now is a good time to start. Flu season is not over and Type The flu is on the rise in many parts of the country. If you have not been vaccinated for the flu, DO SO NOW! It's not too late. We don’t know if flu vaccination can help people cope with COVID-19, but it certainly can't hurt, and it always helps the health of our community to have as many people vaccinated for flu as is possible.

  • COVID-19 Update : Fri., Jan. 1 2020

It has come to the attention of the Del Norte Public Health Department that there is a current Facebook posting of "positive coronavirus at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent
City" which seems to be creating some alarm.

Coronaviruses come in all shapes and types, so to speak, and swab testing of the throat or the nose that is done in an office and in the ER can include testing for coronaviruses, as they are often the source for a respiratory infection. These tests, however, are NOT
testing for the novel (new) coronavirus infection that is in China, and has been in the
news over the last week. The only place that is testing for the new virus in the United States is at the Centers for Disease Control.

There have been no patients at Sutter Coast that have or are being evaluated for the novel (new) coronavirus. There may be many patients in the community who have been tested for other kinds of coronavirus this flu season, and some may have tested positive, but that is to be expected during the heart of the cold and flu season.

Please keep in mind that a positive test on a routine swab for coronavirus is only testing
for known coronaviruses, NOT the novel (new) coronavirus in China. Only two cases of the new virus have been reported in the entire country in the last week. Our community is unlikely to see cases of the new virus anytime soon, and we are extremely unlikely to
be the first place in California to have the new virus appear.
