  • Superintendent's Message to the Community 9-20-2021

Good Afternoon, and welcome to the Monday Update.  I’m Jeff Harris, Superintendent of Schools for Del Norte County.

Today, I need to start with a couple of important COVID updates.  First, You may remember that, at the beginning of the current COVID surge, our local public health department initiated temporary COVID-19 surge protocols to help contain the rate of infection across the county. As a result of this protocol, home tests kits were temporarily approved by public health to be used to self-diagnose COVID-19. That means home test kit results are also being accepted by the district when parents and guardians are reporting positive cases to their child’s school. If your child tests positive, you must provide documentation, such as a photo of the test result, to their school to verify the positive case.  We know that these protocols will change again when the surge in our county ends, but for the time being, this remains an important method of identifying positive COVID-19 cases in our community.

Second, it is more important than ever that parents and guardians screen their children for COVID-like symptoms daily.  If your child exhibits symptoms and you test your child, please keep them home until you have received the test results. If negative, keep them home until symptoms clear without medication for 24 hours or until they are cleared by a physician.  If positive, please follow the isolation instructions provided to you by public health.  Unfortunately, we have had students who have exhibited COVID symptoms and have come back to school before their test results were in.  Tests came back positive, and we have had to quarantine dozens of students, which would have been easily avoided if the students being tested had simply stayed home.

You can find the COVID-19 checklist for families at dnusd.org/familyresources.  We encourage families to print this out and hang it where you can see it as a reminder to screen your child every morning for symptoms prior to attending school. We appreciate your help.  We know how inconvenient this is, but please know that the health and well-being of our students is and will always be a top priority, so do your neighbor a favor and keep children with symptoms home.

To get the most recent information and metrics by school site on COVID-19 positive cases, visit dnusd.org/familyresources and click the “COVID-19 Dashboard.” Likewise, to see our county data, you can visit covid19.dnco.org.

As for sports, our volleyball, golf, and soccer teams all have games this week. Remember that we have made it possible for you to enjoy most of our sports live in your own home.  Due to the continuing high number of positive COVID cases in our county, we ask that you support our students by watching from the best seat in the house- your own living room.   When available, our home games will be live streaming on the Del Norte High Facebook page. For more information on all our upcoming games, times, and locations, please visit dnusd.org/sports.

Well, that's it for this week’s update, we hope you have a great day and we will see you next week.

    Thank you

  • Superintendent's Message to the Community 9-13-2021

Good Afternoon, and welcome to the Monday Update. I’m Jeff Harris, Superintendent of Schools for Del Norte County.

As many of you already know, we have had an increase in COVID cases across the county over the last 2 months, and we have begun to see some of these community cases making their way into the schools. As of last Tuesday, there were 31 active cases of students with COVID-19, and since modified quarantine is currently unavailable for students, many classes across the district were forced to close. As of last Thursday, the number of positive cases had increased to 58.

It is more important than ever that parents and guardians screen their children for COVID-like symptoms and keep them home until symptoms clear without medication or until they are cleared by a physician. We want to be able to keep students in school in person because we know how important it is for their overall growth and well-being. In order to keep students in school, if your child has any symptoms or if you think your child may be positive and you are waiting for test results, please do not send them to school. One child with COVID-19 can cause the closure of multiple classrooms.

I want to let you know, too, that we are making great progress on our ability to test our unvaccinated staff and students who have been identified as close contacts. We currently have 10 staff fully trained in administering the rapid antigen Binax test and are in process of training approximately 30 more staff. We will let all families know before we begin offering testing so that you are aware of this opportunity.

To get the most recent information and metrics by school site on COVID-19 positive cases, visit dnusd.org/familyresources and click the “COVID-19 Dashboard.” Likewise, to see our county data, you can visit covid19.dnco.org.

As for sports, our volleyball, golf, soccer, football, and girls tennis teams all have games this week. Remember that we have made it possible for you to enjoy most of our sports live in your own home. Due to the continuing high number of positive COVID cases in our county, we ask that you support our students by watching from the best seat in the house- your own living room. Home games will be live streaming on the Del Norte High Facebook page. For more information on all our upcoming games, times, and locations, please visit dnusd.org/sports.

Finally, our monthly newsletter, the Del Norte Educator, is back in production. If you would like to see some of the great things happening at our schools, or be kept up to date on all the important news surrounding school, we encourage you to take a look. The Educator can be found on the front page of dnusd.org.

Well, that's it for this week’s update, we hope you have a great day and we will see you next week.
    Thank you

  • Parental Consent for Student COVID19 Testing - Primary.Health

Due to the California Department of Public Health’s testing requirements for students who were close contacts and choose to participate in modified quarantine, DNUSD will be working with Primary.health to gather digital consent forms from parents and guardians for the safe testing of their students at school. Students ages 12 and younger will require parental consent in order to get tested for COVID-19 while at school. Students ages 13 and older may self consent, but those who refuse to be tested at school will be sent home on quarantine until they have been tested by their primary care provider, or have waited out the entire duration of the quarantine. Testing will be required two times per week for students on modified quarantine in order to remain at school.

Primary.health is a web-based platform that provides government agencies, and schools the ability to quickly register participants, gather medical consent forms, arrange for easy on-site check-in and check-out, and easing the reporting process between our district and our local public health.

This initiative will help keep kids in school, learning every day. Students on modified quarantine must undergo testing. If parents/guardians do not provide consent to testing, the student will be required to isolate at home for 10 days before they are able to return to school, as long as they have no symptoms.

We will let all of our families know as soon as registration opens for primary.health, if you have any questions, please reach out to us at communications@dnusd.org.

*Families may have their children tested at their primary care physician instead of on-site at school. We will require 2 tests per week, for 10 days until the modified quarantine is over. Proof of a negative test is required and will need to be submitted to your child's school office.*

  • Intradistrict Transfers Update 8-27-2021

We will not be approving any more Intradistrict Transfer Applications until after school starts.

Given our current teacher staffing shortage, the independent study options that are available, and the number of families that have moved recently, we are unsure of our actual enrollment numbers at each site. Until we’re sure of our enrollment numbers we cannot approve applications for intradistrict transfers. At this time you should plan for and move forward with your student attending their zone school until you hear otherwise. We anticipate by the end of the second week of school to make decisions concerning Intradistrict Transfers.

I’m excited to say that school is scheduled to open in-person, for full days, five days per week, beginning next Monday, August 30.  I just want to let you know, too, that in years past, schools have been let out early on Wednesdays, but this year minimum days will be on Mondays. Wednesdays will now be full school days. So to be clear, the first day of school is a minimum day. Please check with your child’s school for information on their bell schedule.

Last week, during our Wednesday webinar, we discussed COVID health issues that we expect to face and solutions that we expect to implement this year. We also held a special evening webinar on independent study on Wednesday and posted a podcast last Friday discussing the program. If you have questions about independent study, you can visit dnusd.org/is or dnusd.org/independentstudy for more information. And, finally, sports are back and the Del Norte High Warriors are playing at home against Enterprise high this Friday night.  Games are at 5 PM for JV, and 7:30 PM for varsity. Good Afternoon, and welcome to the Monday Update. I’m Jeff Harris, the Superintendent for Del Norte Unified School District and the Del Norte County Office of Education.

Well, we are drawing closer to the first day of school - August 30th. We know parents have a lot of questions concerning the upcoming school year, and we hope to address as many of them as we can over the next few weeks.

It has come to our attention, however, that rumors and comments on social media are leading many of our families to believe that the Board of Education is considering closing schools this fall.

This is not true.  These rumors seem to have started because the Board of Education met on Monday, August 9, in a legally noticed meeting, to discuss whether or not to allow the public to attend the August 12 Board meeting in person, due to the increase of COVID cases within the county and requests by the hospital and Office of Emergency Services to limit gatherings.  At no time was the discussion about whether or not to reopen schools.

School is scheduled to reopen for everyone in-person, full days, five days per week, on August 30, 2021, in alignment with California Department of Public Health guidelines.

Last week, during our Wednesday Webinar, we discussed the CDPH COVID-19 guidelines that were released on August 2nd.  I was able to answer many questions during that webinar, but I know that there are still questions that families would like to ask.  We plan on answering those questions during our Wednesday Webinar on the 18th of this month, where we will be joined by Jeff Napier, our Assistant Superintendent of Business to discuss our COVID-19 protocols and safety procedures for the upcoming school year. To watch last week's webinar, you can go to dnusd.org/families under the golden section titled “communication to families”.

Speaking of questions from parents, we will be sending out information regarding our independent study program, through email, on our website at DNUSD.org, on Facebook, and through our app.  We will also be discussing an independent study on this week’s Wednesday Webinar at 1 PM. We will also be recording a special podcast this week and will be joined by Leslee Machado, Director of Curriculum, and Tom Kissinger, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. During our podcast, we will discuss the various factors and information that goes along with our independent study program. So if you are interested make sure and tune in when it is released this Friday at 5 PM.

On another note, one of the most urgent issues that we’re facing right now is the need for staff.  I want to let everyone in our community know that we are hiring quite a few new positions throughout the district to support our students in the upcoming school year. If you or someone you know may be interested please attend our upcoming job fair this Friday and Saturday at Del Norte High school.  For more information, please visit dnusd.org/hiring.

Again, I hope that your summer is off to a great start, and we’ll continue to update you on local and state mandates and other information regarding the beginning of school as the summer progresses.

    Thank you

  • DNUSD Wednesday Webinar 8/4/2021 @ 1 PM - COVID19 Guidelines & Documentation Review

The State has recently released guidance that requires masks to be worn inside school facilities when students are present.  CDPH, though, has said that local schools should determine how to enforce the mandate. If you would like to learn more about this we encourage you to join us today, August 4th, during our Wednesday webinar where we will dive into current guidance, documentation, and what it means for the upcoming school year.

  • Superintendent's Message to the Community 7-26-2021

Good Afternoon, and welcome to the Monday Update. I’m Jeff Harris, the Superintendent for Del Norte Unified School District and the Del Norte County Office of Education.

Well, it’s been a while!  I hope that everyone’s having a great summer so far.

One of the most urgent issues that we’re facing right now is the need for staff.  I want to let everyone in our community know that we are hiring quite a few new positions throughout the district to support our students in the upcoming school year. If you or someone you know may be interested please visit dnusd.org/hiring.

Another important piece of the new legislation is that parents of high school students or students ages 18 or older who attended high school last year may request a grade change for the courses taken in the 2020-21 school year, in order to accommodate students who struggled with distance learning during the pandemic. Parents should meet with their child’s principal and teacher to discuss their options. The change request form is available on the Del Norte High School website, at dnhigh.org.

Finally, I know that there has been some confusion out there based on what has been put out by the state regarding masks.   Many of you are already aware that the State has recently released guidance that requires masks to be worn inside school facilities when students are present.  CDPH, though, has said that local schools should determine how to enforce the mandate.   We’re still trying to get clarification about the mandate and discussing legal requirements.  If you would like to learn more about this we encourage you to join us on August 4th during our next weekly webinar where we will dive into current guidance, documentation, and what it means for the upcoming school year.

Again, I hope that your summer is off to a great start, and we’ll continue to update you on local and state mandates and other information regarding the beginning of school as the summer progresses.

  • Superintendent's Message to the Community 6-21-2021

Good Afternoon, and welcome to our Monday Update.  I’m Jeff Harris, the District & County Superintendent of schools for Del Norte County.

It was great seeing students, their families, and community members in person at the Del Norte High Graduation last Wednesday. That was without a doubt, the best and most memorable gathering of the year, and it was very apparent that everyone was happy to be able to attend in person. Graduation photos will be available on the Del Norte High website and Facebook pages, if you are unable to find your student’s graduation photos, please email communications@dnusd.org.

In looking forward to next year, we have started to receive guidance from the state, from both the state department of public health and Cal OSHA, regarding changes to COVID health and safety requirements. Most guidance has been in regards to employees, but there has also been some movement around masking for students.  For the time being, all students and staff in our summer school programs are required to wear masks.  The California Department of Public Health will be issuing new guidance once the CDC has updated their school guidelines, which will hopefully be this week. I would like to invite everyone to our webinar this week on Wednesday at 1 PM to go over some of the new requirements and guidelines and take a deeper dive into what this could mean for the upcoming school year.

Our Seamless Summer food program is also officially underway.  If you aren’t familiar with the program, we provide meals every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday through August 13.  Meals are available from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm, again, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at a variety of locations across the county, including in the Klamath community, all of which you can find listed at dnusd.org/food. All children and youth ages 18 and under will be provided two days of meals on each service day.

Finally,  with school officially over, all student devices should have been returned last Friday.  If for some reason you were unable to return your child’s device to their school, you can drop it off at the district office, which is located next to the football field on Washington boulevard.

I hope that your summer is off to a great start.  We’ll continue to update you on guidance changes, local and state mandates, and other information as the summer progresses.

    Thank you

Good Afternoon, and welcome to our Monday Update. I’m Jeff Harris, the District & County Superintendent of schools for Del Norte County.

Once again, we are waiting on guidance from the state regarding changes to masking and social distancing requirements for the next school year. We expect to hear from the state by tomorrow, but Cal OSHA will not meet until Thursday to weigh in on the topic. I had anticipated inviting everyone to a webinar this week to go over the new requirements, but it looks like we’ll have to wait until next Wednesday to see what really happens. My hope, as is the hope of many of you, is to see a change in the guidelines that made it impossible for us to bring back all of our students full-time this last year.

On a brighter note, Del Norte High School will be doing an in-person graduation ceremony this Wednesday on June 16th at 6:00 PM. The graduation will be live-streamed on Youtube and on the high school’s Facebook page. For those of you watching the live stream, you can visit dnusd.org for links to the graduation live stream.

  • Possible Armed Subject Response at Del Norte High School - 6/9/2021 @ 6:45 PM

We want to thank all of the outstanding law enforcement departments who responded. Their professionalism and commitment to the safety of our schools is something that every person in Del Norte County should be proud of. Further questions should be directed to the Crescent City Police Department. You can reach them at 707-464-4191.

The Crescent City Police Department released the following statement earlier this evening:

DNSO dispatch received a phone call from a subject who stated they were armed with a rifle and a handgun at the graduation ceremony taking place at the high school. The subject also made threats via telephone, stating that they were going to start shooting. Several agencies quickly responded to the high school and escorted people out and searched for the subject. Currently, a suspect vehicle with occupants is detained and an investigation is taking place. We will update you as soon as we have further information. We have no reports of any injuries taking place during this incident.

Anyone with any information about this is urged to call dispatch and report it. 707-464-4191.

As we finish the year and move through graduations, we are putting a pause on podcasts and webinars, until June 16, where we will discuss new COVID-19 guidance changes, summer school, and any information that we have regarding the beginning of the 21-22 school year. We will, though, continue to provide Monday updates for your information.

  • Superintendent's Message to the Community 5-24-2021

Good Afternoon, and welcome to our Monday Update.  I’m Jeff Harris, the District & County Superintendent of schools for Del Norte County.

This week we are on a regular schedule.  We will, however, be out of school next Monday for Memorial Day.  Again, this weekend will be a three-day weekend with no school on Monday, May 31. Another change this week is that there will be no Meal service this Friday or Memorial Day Monday.  Instead, students will be provided with additional meals on either Wednesday or Thursday to serve as their Friday meal.

Because Monday is an off day, next Friday, June 4 will be an in-person school day.  If your child is scheduled to attend in person on the Monday/Wednesday group they will have school in person on Friday, June 4.

Moving on to sports, we’re kicking off girls and boys basketball and wrestling this week, and we have a sporting event every day from now through this Saturday. Remember, we are live streaming all of the following home games:  JV and varsity girls basketball play tonight at home against Ferndale and McKinleyville starting at 6:00 PM, JV and varsity boys basketball play this Wednesday at home against Hoopa at 4:30 and 7:00 PM, and boys basketball also plays at home this Saturday against Arcata at 4:30 and 7:30 PM.  All other athletic events are away this week.  For more information please visit the Del Norte High web page.

On this Wednesday’s webinar, we will be joined by our middle and high school principals for an update on graduations.  As I’ve said before, we’re in the process of planning graduations, and our goal is to have all graduations in person to the fullest extent possible.  We also plan on live streaming all of these events.  We look forward to seeing you there in person or virtually.

As a special reminder, registration for our summer school programs is still open but filling up very fast.  Remember, registration is limited and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to participate, your child must be registered, by June 4, in a district or county office of education school for the 2021-22 school year.  You’ll need to submit a separate registration form for each child you are registering. Food will be provided, transportation will be available, and those enrolled in summer school will also have access to the after-school program. All this information is outlined in the registration form, which is available on the front page of DNUSD.org

Remember that you can get the most recent COVID positive case updates for schools at dnusd.org/familyresources and click the “COVID-19 Dashboard”, this is updated every Tuesday, or you can go to covid19.ca.gov for information on the county and state.  Remember, too, that the governor has said that the Blueprint for a Safer Economy will expire on June 15, and we will pass the information along to you as it becomes available.

Finally, you can stay up to date on all of these topics and more by making sure you have an updated email and cell phone number in your child’s school records.  You can also download our app, visit us on social media, or get up-to-date information at school and district websites, all of which can be accessed through DNUSD.org/families.

  • Superintendent's Message to the Community 5-3-2021

Good Afternoon, I’m Jeff Harris, the District & County Superintendent of schools for Del Norte County. We have quite a bit to go over today.

First, we have some great news, our teachers and our District have been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Now in its 22nd year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

On a similar note, over the past few weeks, we have been gathering nominations for Classified School Employees of the Year, and I want to thank everyone who nominated one of our outstanding colleagues for this recognition. CSEA and the District met to review nominations and selected the following finalists to move forward to the statewide competition.

    Paraprofessional- Cindy Pimental
Clerical and Administrative Services- Debbie Mann
    Transportation Services- Priscilla Herrera
Food and Nutrition Services- Loni Salvaressa
Custodial and Maintenance Services- Jeanette Zebal
    Technical Services- Dan Gustafson
    Skilled Trades- Ray Sherwin

We want to congratulate these and all of those nominated as classified employees of the Year, and thanks to all of our classified staff for the work you do every day.

May 3rd through the 7th is teacher appreciation week, and May 16-22 is classified employee appreciation week. We think, though, that one week isn’t enough time to celebrate the dedication and work of teachers or classified educators. That’s why we’re turning May into Educator Appreciation Month. It’s a chance to recognize all of the excellent educators of Del Norte County and the amazing work they do on behalf of their students. So please, if you see a teacher or classified staff member this week, tell them thank you for everything they do.

Also, May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. Tune in to our podcast this week as we talk about Mental Health Awareness Month with local partners and discuss what supports are available for students and families in our community.

Each year, the State requires that school districts update and/or develop a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). This means that the school district must gather input from a variety of stakeholders to determine the goals, actions, and budget priorities for the district. Most of the funds addressed in our LCAP are what are called supplemental and concentration funds. These funds are based on the number of economically disadvantaged students, foster youth, homeless students, and students who are English Learners. We are asking that everyone in our community take a quick survey to help with the LCAP process. This survey is designed to get your input about how our district should prioritize its needs and focus its efforts over the course of the next few years. The survey will be open for responses for one week: May 3rd to May 7th.

You can find the survey at lcap.dnusd.org
And remember too, to get the most up-to-date information on school and COVID-19, check the link in the post below.

That is all for this week’s Monday update, and hope you have a healthy and safe week ahead. Thank you

  • LCAP Community Input Survey

We need your help filling out our yearly LCAP survey!

The State of California requires school districts to develop a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). This means that the school district must gather input from students, teachers, parents, community members, and public agencies to determine the goals, actions, and budget priorities for the district. School districts receive additional funding to improve student support and learning. These additional funds are provided to districts based on their population of low-income students (based on qualifying for the national Free and Reduced Price Meal Program), foster youth, homeless students, and students who are English Learners.

This survey is designed to get your input about how our district should prioritize its needs and focus its efforts over the course of the next few years. The survey will be open for responses for one week: April 3rd to May 7th.

Please take a few moments to give your input on this important process.

This Wednesday during our regularly scheduled webinar and on our Friday podcast, Leslee Machado, our director of curriculum, Ryan Batten, the district director of network information services, and Tom Kissinger, the assistant superintendent of educational services will join me to discuss what these changes will look like. We look forward to seeing you there.

For those of you wondering about sports, this Wednesday, there are both softball and baseball games happening, and they will be live-streamed. The Del Norte High track team will compete against Fortuna on Wednesday in Fortuna, but this event will not be live-streamed.

As I’ve said before, we’re in the process of planning graduations. After meeting with all 8th grade and high school principals, our goal is to have all graduations in person to the fullest extent possible. • Superintendent's Message to the Community 4-12-2021

Good Afternoon, welcome back and we hope you had a safe and refreshing spring break, my name is Jeff Harris and I am the District & County Superintendent of schools.

To kick off this week’s updates, I wanted to let you know that last week, the governor stated that the tiered system to identify COVID cases is scheduled to go away on June 15, which means that we are moving forward in planning a full, regular return to school this fall.  While we’re excited by this news, we will continue to monitor directives from the State Department of Public Health and Governor's office and keep you up to date.

I also wanted to let you know that our middle and high schools are in the process of planning graduation activities for the end of this year.  While the state did put out some guidance a few weeks ago, with the announcements made last week, we’re not sure how the guidance is going to be interpreted.  Again, your child’s principal will let you know of the final plans for graduations.

This week will be the final games for football and soccer.  Tonight our girls’ volleyball will begin, followed by baseball and softball playing their first games next Wednesday, April 21.  If you haven’t been able to attend a home football game and are missing seeing our Warriors in action, you can tune in to our live stream or watch previous games whenever you want.  We will also be live streaming tonight’s volleyball game.  For more information on sports schedules, you can visit the DNHS athletics website, the District website, or our Facebook page.

And for our final update, to get the most recent information and metrics by school site on COVID-19 positive cases, visit dnusd.org/familyresources and click the “COVID-19 Dashboard.”  Likewise, to see where our county, region, and state are, you can visit covid19.ca.gov or search for Blueprint for a Safer Economy.  I have been asked what it would mean for our schools if our county returned to the purple tier.  Because we are already back in person and our athletics are moving forward, there would be no changes to our current schedules or activities.

Remember you can stay up to date on everything that’s happening in the district by making sure you have an updated email and cell phone number in your child’s school records.  You can also download our app, visit us on social media, or get up-to-date information at school and district websites, all of which will be posted below in this message.

That is all for this week’s Monday update, we are glad to be back, and hope you have a healthy and safe week ahead.  Thank you.

  • Superintendent's Message to the Community 3-29-2021

    Good afternoon,
Welcome to our regular Monday update, my name is Jeff Harris and I am the District & County Superintendent of schools.

A quick update, the last day for spring Parent-Teacher conferences for K-8 students is this Friday, April 2nd. If you have not been contacted to schedule a conference and you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your child’s teacher as soon as possible to make those arrangements.

You may also be aware that over the past few weeks, the number of students and staff testing positive for COVID has increased at some of our schools. This has led to some classroom and athletic quarantines. It is possible that if case rates continue to climb or schools have multiple outbreaks, individual schools or even the entire district may have to close. We believe that we can prevent that from happening as long as we continue to follow established health and safety practices both in our schools and our homes. So, remember hands face space, and home. Wash or sanitize your hands, wear your mask when necessary, physically distance, and keep your child home if they or you have COVID-like symptoms.

On this week’s podcast, we are very excited to be joined by Dan Sedgwick, Christie Lynn Rust, and Nick Rail, all teachers or community members who are drivers in our ability to provide a high-quality music program for our students. That podcast will air this Friday at 5 PM and you can find it on our Facebook page or at dnusd.org/podcast.

Finally, just a reminder, that spring break is next week, April 5th-9th, and there will be no school or meal service until students return on Monday, April 12th. Also as we look toward students returning on the 12th, if your child is currently in 100% distance learning and you are interested in making the switch back to in-person blended learning, please reach out to your child’s school as soon as you’re able to begin the process.

I hope you all have a safe and healthy week and spring break.

  • Superintendent's Message to the Community 3-22-2021

Today is a distance learning day, and we were informed that some parents were not aware of today’s schedule change.  We wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that our calendars are posted online, monthly updates are emailed home, information is pushed out to our app, and information is posted on our website and Facebook pages.  If you did not receive communication about today’s schedule, please reach out to your child’s school to make sure your contact information is correct.  You can also email communications@dnusd.org and give us feedback on how we can communicate with you more effectively.

We also want to remind everyone that the next date for Parent-Teacher conferences for TK-8 students is April 2.  Teachers have been and will be reaching out to families of students who are struggling the most.  If, though, you have not been contacted to schedule a conference and you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your child’s teacher.  Please see the schedule attached to this post for more information. Schedule - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rAYOoUjj3SO7DDKUSmlSGYngzAlaTyjI/view?usp=sharing

You may also be aware that over the past few weeks, the number of students and staff combined testing positive for COVID has increased from just a few or even none in any given week to 11 currently.  Remember, while we don’t want to minimize the effect COVID can have on any individual or family, this number represents only ¼ of 1% of all students and staff within the district.  As of today, none of the cases involving students are linked to transmission at schools, but increased cases can lead to class closure, athletics closure, or other negative outcomes for our students.  So, remember hands face space, and home.  Wash or sanitize your hands, wear your mask when necessary, physically distance, and keep your child home if they or you have COVID-like symptoms.  Also, if you are waiting for the results of a COVID test due to having symptoms, please keep your child home.

Finally, spring break is April 5th-9th, there will be no school that week, and students will be back in class on Monday, April 12th.  Speaking of April 12, if your child is currently in 100% distance learning and you are interested in making the switch back to in-person blended learning as of April 12, please reach out to your child’s school as soon as you’re able to begin the process.

  • DNHS Sports & COVID-19 Testing

    Dear Del Norte Families,

We have been made aware that two members of the varsity football team tested positive for COVID-19.  Public health, through their contact tracing, determined that the team should be quarantined through March 23.  We have been asked why there was no testing available for our team so that we weren’t finding out about positive cases at the last minute.  While football requires a certain amount of testing in order for teams to compete, the Humboldt-Del Norte (HDN) League requirements as set by the CA Department of Public Health and local public health officials, only require that students are tested and have results 24 hours before competition.  Testing was scheduled for March 4 but was canceled following the updated testing guidance.  We arranged for testing again on March 12, for the purposes of competing in a scrimmage but canceled due to the elimination of the scrimmage.  We are currently working with Del Norte Public Health to provide antigen tests for all players and coaches and have also begun training our nurses so that our District can provide tests, as well.  If you would like for your child to participate in more frequent testing, CVS and private providers are providing testing, and the County now hosts OPTUMServe testing at the following locations and times:

Tuesday - Smith River, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Smith River Fire (Old Ray's Food Place)

Wednesday – Klamath, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Holiday Inn Express

Thursday, Friday, Saturday - Crescent City, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Front Street Park at Kidstown

Register online at: https://lhi.care/covidtesting or Register by calling  (888) 634-1123

So what does that mean for our football season?  Bob Hadfield has been working with HDN to ensure that our team is able to play to the fullest extent possible this football season.  As a result, the varsity and junior varsity games scheduled for Friday, March 19, have been postponed to Friday, April 9. The junior varsity will also play Saturday, March 20 at Fortuna versus Eureka. For an updated schedule of athletics, please visit the DNHS website and visit the Athletics option under the Student Activities tab.  It’s also been asked if we will have enough practices to meet the CIF requirements to play.  Mr. Hadfield has been working with HDN to clarify this, as well.  In his conversations, our team has already conducted 9 team practices and with the ability to practice on March 24 and 25, will have a total of 11 team practices.  Due to the quarantine, our coach plans to conduct a minimum of 3 practice/strategy sessions via Zoom, for a total of 14 team practices.  Each player must attend at least 10 of the 14 team practices.   Meeting these requirements will not be a challenge, and we should still be ready to play our first game on March 26.

Our goal is for every athlete, in every grade, to be able to compete this year to the fullest extent possible.  We will continue to work with local public health and HDN to support our students as much as possible.  We ask all of you to continue to support our student-athletes by taking as many precautions as are necessary to ensure that exposure to COVID-19 is limited.  Remember- wash or sanitize your hands frequently, wear a face covering, physically distance, and stay or keep your child home if sick or symptomatic.

On our webinar last week we were joined by Bob Hadfield and Paige Swan, and we discussed some important sports updates, if you are interested in what was discussed, please visit dnusd.org/families and scroll down to the section labeled “communication to families”, you can watch the webinar there, or select “podcasts” to also listen to what was discussed.

This past weekend, too, we were notified that a member of the varsity football team tested positive for COVID-19, and the team has been quarantined by Public Health through March 23. We are following health guidance as required by CDPH and local public health. In response to the quarantine, the varsity game scheduled for Friday, March 19, has been postponed to Friday, April 9, and the JV game scheduled for Friday, March 19, has been postponed to Saturday, March 20. There will be no varsity game against Ferndale on April 10.  This will allow our players to play the most games, as long as there is no other quarantine. Our goal is for every athlete, in every grade, to be able to compete this year to the fullest extent possible.  For more information, please visit the Del Norte High website and go to the Athletics tab under Student Activities.

Please remember that next week Monday is a distance learning day for everyone and students who usually attend on Monday will attend in person on Friday.  Parent-Teacher conferences for TK-8 will be March 19, March 22, and April 2.  Teachers have been and will be reaching out to families of students who are struggling the most.  If, though, you have not been contacted to schedule a conference and you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your student’s teacher.  Please see the attached schedule for more information.

  • Attention 2 Attendance Update

Yesterday, the District published a Facebook post and made a call home notifying parents about attendance letters that will be sent to families beginning next week.  We sincerely apologize for any anxiety or stress that the post or phone call caused.  It was never the intent of the post to threaten or intimidate.  Our goal was exactly the opposite.  Despite the fact that we are required by the State, through compulsory attendance laws and SB 98, to maintain attendance records and to notify families of attendance issues,  we want to let families know we are here to focus on supports and assistance for students and not enforcement through the courts.

We have heard clearly from families about issues surrounding Zoom and the impacts that distance learning and limited in-person attendance are having on families and students. We understand the hardships faced by families in balancing work, childcare, and the added burdens of children being educated at home, along with other concerns.  Because we are aware of these issues, the only attendance letters that will be sent are for absences that are unexcused.  No letters will be sent based on excused absences, illness, technical issues, quarantine, or other health, safety, or hardship reasons. For all of these reasons, and more, we want to support each student and family.  We truly ask you to reach out to staff if there is anything we can do to help.

We also have the same desire as all of our families- to return to school full time, five days per week, in-person with every student.

It has been stated that teachers, Board members, or District leadership are the reason that schools have not returned to in-person instruction. This is simply not true.  Local bargaining units and the District created agreements in the fall to return when most other districts throughout the state were not even willing to discuss reopening.  Moreover, the Board of Trustees has pushed for reopening as soon as possible to the fullest extent possible as long as we were following the law and meeting the safety requirements mandated by the State.

The State of California, however, has created a set of criteria that the District must use to keep students coming to school in person.  These guidelines, developed by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Cal/OSHA, include the requirement that students be seated a minimum of four feet apart.   Our classrooms are simply not large enough to meet this requirement with every student in the room in most cases.  Should the requirements from the State change to allow more flexibility, we will immediately work together with labor partners, the Board of Trustees, and administration to bring students back to the fullest extent possible. (We encourage you to read all of the school opening requirements on the CDPH website here: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/CDPH%20Document%20Library/COVID-19/Consolidated_Schools_Guidance.pdf.

Some comments claimed that these letters are only about funding.  We want to assure you the letters are not about funding. This year and next, our funding is not tied to attendance.  In a typical year, school funding is tied to a variety of factors, including daily attendance. This is not a typical year. Our focus has and will always be for students to be able to participate as fully as possible in school and school-related activities for equipping students for success, whether that is in person or distance learning.

Again, we sincerely apologize for any undue stress and anxiety that may have been caused by our previous post. We are here to support our families in their student’s education. Please reach out to your child’s school for help or visit our special page for families at www.dnusd.org/families for more information.  We are also creating an attendance Q&A to address the concerns of families.  If you have a question that you would like answered, please email communications@dnusd.org.

  • Attention 2 Attendance

    Dear Del Norte Families,

At the heart of everything we do is the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed.  We provide that support and opportunity by teaching our students every day, in a safe and healthy environment. Since October, attendance has been unusually low, and students have suffered as a result.  At this point, 36%, or more than 1 out of 3 students in Del Norte County schools, are currently identified by the State of California as chronically absent.

As you know, school attendance is required by the State of California, and the school district is responsible for communicating with you about your child’s attendance.  Teachers, principals, and/or Officer Hernandez, our family resource officer, may have already spoken with you to provide support in ensuring that your child is able to participate in school.  Over the next few days, you may be receiving a letter from our attendance monitoring and communication system, Attention to Attendance (A2A).

Due to the pandemic and in an effort to meet the individual needs of our students and value the difficulties faced by families, we have not sent attendance letters this year, and we will not be including any attendance before October 19, 2020. A2A, though, is relaunching this week.  We understand there may be a variety of reasons your child has not been able to participate in school for the past few months, but we remain committed to ensuring all students have access to an education in spite of these challenges and to support you to the fullest extent possible.

There will be two types of letters that are going home:

    • Missed Distance Learning Participation (3 levels of absence - 3, 8, 12)
      • If marked Absent with No Participation on a Distance Learning day
      • This is Absence Code “L” or “4”
    • Unexcused In Person Participation Letter (3 levels of absence - 3, 6, 9)
      • If marked Absent without a valid excuse on an In Person Learning day
      • This is Absence Code “A”

It is not our goal, nor is it the goal of the District Attorney, to prosecute families, but we want to notify, reach out, and support.  We must, however, also document attendance, as required by law.  Moving forward you may be receiving letters in the mail concerning the attendance of your child.  If you receive a letter or multiple letters (depending on the number of absences) over the next few weeks and have already been working through attendance issues with your child’s principal, we want to thank you and encourage you to continue that process.  If you have not been in contact with your child’s school and you receive a letter, we ask that you please contact your child’s principal and work with staff to help resolve the issue.

  • Superintendent's Message to the Community 2-22-2021

*IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR FAMILIES LIVING SOUTH OF LAST CHANCE GRADE*
Even though Last Chance Grade is open for one-way traffic, due to safety concerns, and the frequency of slides, we have determined that students living south of Last Chance Grade will not attend in-person schooling for the remainder of the week. Instead, they will participate in distance learning until the slide has stabilized. Food will still be available through curbside pickup at Margaret Keating school.

Our next webinar will be this Wednesday, February 24th, at 1 PM. This week’s webinar will focus on Preschool, TK, and Kindergarten Registration. If you have children or grandchildren ages 2 to 5 be sure to watch because we will have guests discussing these programs and providing information on registration requirements.

As part of our weekly update, we want to let you know that to get up-to-date information and metrics by school site on COVID-19 infection rates, you can visit dnusd.org/familyresources and click the “COVID-19 Dashboard.” Likewise, to see where our county, region, and state are, you can visit covid19.ca.gov or search for Blueprint for a Safer Economy.

We are continuing to work with Public Health to coordinate vaccines for our staff. There have been some supply chain issues that were further complicated by the storms back east, but as of last week, the state of California has committed to dedicating ten percent of all vaccines to public education personnel in California. Once vaccines are available again for our staff we will be sure to let you know.

Del Norte High School opened for in-person learning last week and we are extremely happy to have kids back. Students and staff are following health precautions and procedures to reduce the risk of infection. Students are doing their part to help keep school and Del Norte open. Good Job DNHS students, we are happy to see you back in the classroom and walking the halls, it just wasn’t the same without you.

Finally, We are pleased to announce that the California Department of Public Health will be lifting the ban on some sports, including high contact outdoor sports like football, as of Friday, February 26. There are restrictions and conditions on moving forward. I would encourage you to view the new guidance by visiting dnusd.org/familyresources and scroll down to sports guidelines under the “Additional Resources” section. We will work to get any necessary clarification, to work with public health to meet any health-related mandates, and to allow CIF to provide additional guidance. And just a reminder- All athletes must have a physical in order to try out, practice, or compete. We’re excited to move forward as quickly as possible. Go Warriors!

  • DNUSD: No Bus Service to Klamath Tomorrow, Friday, 2/19/21

*The following only applies to families living south of Last Chance Grade*

Slide activity at Last Chance Grade has increased due to the current storm, and Hwy 101 was closed for several hours today due to the slide.  As we are expecting additional rain and potential slide activity in the next 12-24 hours and current wait times are in excess of 30 minutes, no bus service to Klamath will be offered tomorrow, Friday, 2/19/21.  All Margaret Keating School, Crescent Elk, Del Norte High, and Sunset students who live south of Last Chance Grade will attend school through distance learning on Friday.  If your child attends Margaret Keating and your child needs a space to access the internet tomorrow, please contact Margaret Keating.

Food services will be available at Margaret Keating tomorrow, and food can be picked up curbside.

Again, we understand the inconvenience that this situation imposed on our students and their families, but we want to be proactive regarding the safety of our students and staff.  Families will be notified of any changes to these plans as soon as possible.

  • DNUSD: Bus Services Traveling from Klamath to Crescent City Canceled Thursday Due to Last Chance Grade

*Only applies to families living south of Last Chance Grade*

Due to continuing slide activity at Last Chance Grade and the arrival of a storm front that may bring 1”-2” of rain in the next 24-36 hours, bus service from Klamath to Crescent City will not be offered tomorrow, Thursday, 2/18/21. All Crescent Elk, Del Norte High, and Sunset students who live in Klamath and ride a bus to Crescent City will attend school through distance learning on Thursday. Transportation will determine tomorrow, based on the condition of the road, whether bus service will be offered on Friday.

Tomorrow, we anticipate that buses will be able to pick-up Margaret Keating students only, and take them to school, as scheduled. If the road is open in the afternoon, students will be transported home, as scheduled. If the road is closed, families will be notified as soon as possible, and alternative transportation home will be provided.

Crescent Elk students who live in Klamath may also report to Margaret Keating School to use the internet. The school will provide a staffed room for them to use. They must bring their own laptop and participate in distance learning. To keep stable groups on the bus, Crescent Elk students will not be allowed to ride the bus with Margaret Keating students.

Food services will be available at Margaret Keating tomorrow. For those students participating in distance learning, food can be picked up curbside. More information will be provided in the morning.

We understand the challenges that this may present to students and families, but safety is of the utmost importance. Families will be notified of any changes to these plans as soon as possible.

  • DNUSD: HWY 101 S Last Chance Grade - Closed Due to Slides

As of this posting, HWY 101 remains fully closed due to multiple landslides at Last Chance Grade. Caltrans estimates that one-way traffic may begin this afternoon assuming no additional slide activity occurs. While our goal is to have all students attend in-person as fully as possible, due to safety, staffing, transportation, and food service considerations, we are currently working with two scenarios for students south of Last Chance Grade at this time:

Scenario 1: If traffic at Last Chance Grade remains closed until 10:00 PM or closes again after 10:00 PM tonight, in-person school will be canceled for Margaret Keating students. All Keating classes will move to distance learning. Students who would otherwise be attending Crescent Elk, Del Norte High, or other schools in Crescent City in-person will instead participate through distance learning. This model will be in place until Hwy 101 reopens for transportation and nutrition service.

Scenario 2: If traffic at Last Chance Grade opens prior to 10 PM and remains open through the night, schools will continue operations as normal. Keating students who ride the bus will be picked up at their normal time and should return home at normal times. Students riding the bus to in-town schools will be picked up as close as possible to their normal time but will most likely be dropped off 30 to 60 minutes late when returning home. If your child rides a bus from Klamath to Crescent City for school, we strongly encourage you to make alternative care plans, in the event that a slide occurs while your child is attending school in Crescent City and is unable to return home.

Parents and guardians south of the slide may keep your child home and participate in distance learning if you do not want to send your child over Last Chance Grade, as Caltrans continues to work the slide.

We will post another update at 10 PM tonight to let you know with which scenario we will be moving forward.

  • Superintendent's Message to the Community 2-1-2021

Last week on our Weekly Wednesday Webinar we took some time to review updated CDPH guidelines for COVID-19 and how that affects all schools. Alison Eckart and High School Senior Maykala Jackson also joined us on the “Coffee and Conversation” podcast on Friday to discuss what life is like for students while attending school through distance-learning. Both of these recordings can be found on the dnusd.org/families page under the “Communications to families” section.

This week’s podcast will have Jennifer Eames, School Psychologist, Debbie West, Early Start Coordinator at the Redwood Coast Regional Center, and Trish Wraith, DNUSD Infant Toddler Special Education Teacher talking about early Interventions for children ages 0-3.

We also want to let you know that beginning this week the Weekly Wednesday Webinar will take place every other week. Our next webinar will be next Wednesday, February 10, at 1 PM. We may have special webinars, and if so, we will make sure and let you know. Next week we'll be discussing Early Head Start & Preschool. If you have children or grandchildren ages 0 to 4 be sure to watch because we will have several guests discussing the programs and providing information on preschool registration.

Public Health and UIHS are piloting the expanded testing program this week, which they’ve been working on for the past few months. Once this is complete, we will provide additional information on our website regarding how to register for testing at the new locations. Also, Public Health will be holding a vaccination clinic this Saturday. In order to be vaccinated, you must be pre-registered. If you are a school employee and wish to receive the vaccine, please contact human resources at 464-6141. If you are not a school employee and are 65 or older, public health asks that you contact your healthcare provider. For additional information on immunizations, please visit covid19.dnco.org/vaccines.

The status of COVID-19 in our county is also on everyone’s mind. To get up to date information and metrics by school site on COVID-19 infection rates throughout Del Norte Unified School District, please visit dnusd.org/familyresources click the “COVID-19 Dashboard” and you will be able to see all active cases in the District. Likewise, to see where our county, region, and state are, you can visit covid19.ca.gov or search for Blueprint for a Safer Economy.

As for the reopening of Del Norte High, we are currently in a holding pattern until our county moves into the red tier. The state updates tier status each Tuesday at noon. Once we move into the red, we are required to wait 5 calendar days before bringing students on campus. As soon as our status changes, we will notify you all immediately.

  • CDPH COVID-19 Guidelines Update

We are currently updating our documentation to reflect recent changes to the CDPH COVID-19 guidelines. In the meantime, we want to make sure that families are aware that while attending in-person schooling, all K-12 students are required to wear their masks at all times, except for those who have an exemption.

  • Superintendent's Message to the Community 1-25-2021

I want to start our update this week by congratulating Andre Pamplona Da Silva, a senior at Del Norte High School, who has been awarded a spot in the National Association for Music Education 2020 All-National Honor Ensembles and will be one of 241 vocalists in an ensemble comprised of 500 high school students from across the country who will take part in a special virtual performance. Again, congratulations, Andre!

I also want to let you know that this week on our Weekly Wednesday Webinar we will be joined by Alison Eckart who will provide an update on the plan for reopening in-person learning at Del Norte High School.

We’ll also take some time to review updated CDPH guidelines for COVID-19 and how that affects all schools. Alison will also be joining our podcast this week for more of an in-depth discussion on how she and her staff are continuing to prepare to reopen the school.

On a similar note, our last podcast conversation with Special Education staff ranged from early childhood services to how seniors can get on the job training. I was joined by three wonderful employees from our special education department, and we learned more about how they work with children and behind the scenes to provide services. I would encourage you to give it a listen if you haven’t already.

Likewise, to see where our county, region, and state are, you can visit covid19.ca.gov or search for Blueprint for a safer economy. I also had the opportunity to speak with Del Norte County Public Health Officer Dr. Rehwalt last week. We anticipate the administration of COVID-19 vaccines for staff in mid-February and will continue to work with public health to get vaccines to staff as soon as possible.

Finally, there are two upcoming public zoom events we want our community to know about:

This first event runs for 6 weeks starting at 6:30 PM every Tuesday beginning February 2nd and is called Social Emotional Strategies for Parents and Caregivers. Lindy Holloway, the early childhood education coach from Del Norte County Office of Education, will host this workshop with Susan Smith, the Interim Director at Howonquet Preschool, and will give parents, caregivers, and guardians a deeper understanding of why young children behave the way they do and how we can equip ourselves with the tools we need to create a deeper positive relationship with them. To register please email lholloway@dnusd.org or call her at 707-954-9333

The next event is Parent connections, facilitated by Local MFT Cheryl Simons, During this 60-minute zoom session, participants will learn about anxiety and the brain, pick up a few calming techniques, and discuss the challenges of being a parent or caregiver and how we can cope with some of the hardships of these unprecedented times. • Superintendent's Message to the Community 1-11-2021

We are continuing to plan, to work with staff, and to hire new staff as we move toward expanding the number of students at Del Norte High on January 25. As a side note, we are looking for qualified individuals to fill these and many other positions. If you are interested in working for the District, please call 464-6141 or visit our website for more information.

As I shared last week, we have begun discussing the administration of COVID vaccines for educational staff. It appears that we will be able to get vaccines to staff, beginning in February. We will continue to work with public health and our staff to get vaccines to staff as soon as possible.

On Friday, the Governor shared his preliminary budget proposal for the upcoming year. While there is good news, many questions still remain. We will host a special budget proposal overview, once we have had an opportunity to more fully understand the impact on our county.

Last week on our Weekly Wednesday Webinar we were joined by Alison Eckart who provided a brief update on the plan for expanding in-person learning at Del Norte High School. On the webinar we were also joined by Lisa Howard as she presented a new community resource called Connect Del Norte, which will help connect community members with support and services that are available locally, that can be found at connectdelnorte.org. At last week’s webinar Lisa also touched on the importance of attendance for students and the long-lasting impacts it has on their education. For more information on that, you can find the recordings of the weekly webinars at dnusd.org/families

Please remember, too, that, although our schools are open, we may have to close a class, a school, or the district if we see widespread positive cases of COVID. To avoid that, we are asking everyone to take universal precautions of handwashing, masking, and physical distancing, and staying home if you are sick.

For more information on all of the steps you can take to help ensure that classrooms and schools remain open, please visit our website at dnusd.org/familyresources or the California Department of Public Health at cdph.ca.gov.

  • Superintendent's Message to the Community 1-4-2020

Last Wednesday, the Governor announced the Safe Schools for All plan, California’s framework to support schools to continue operating safely in-person and to expand the number of schools safely resuming in-person instruction. This new plan includes four major components: funding, safety & mitigation, oversight & assistance, and transparency & accountability.  As Del Norte is already engaged in in-person learning, we will be closely following the details of this proposal over the next few weeks.  You may also hear about an emergency bill in the CA legislature, AB 10.  This bill would require schools not already in person to move to in-person as soon as possible.  As our district is already in person, this bill should have little, if any, impact on us.

Remember, too, that Del Norte is not currently under the modified stay at home order.  Any potential stay at home order is based on whether the regional ICU capacity falls below 15%.  As of yesterday, our regional capacity is just over 35%.

As of today, there are three reasons that our schools would close - executive or public health order, staff or student infection rates within schools, or quarantines so widespread that we do not have enough staff to allow our schools to function.

To help avoid transmission and quarantines, we continue to encourage families to consider requesting an independent study contract for up to two weeks of in-person learning following out of area travel or hosting visitors from out of the area.  This would still allow your child to participate with their teacher and other classmates virtually but would also allow time for families to monitor for COVID-19 symptoms or to be tested for COVID prior to returning to school. We are asking everyone to take universal precautions of handwashing, masking, and physical distancing, and staying home if you are sick.

We have also had some very preliminary conversations with public health regarding COVID vaccines for educational staff.  The State has committed to putting educators near the top of the priority list for vaccines.  We will continue to work with public health and our staff to get vaccines to staff as soon as possible.

For more information on all of the steps you can take to help ensure that classrooms and schools remain open, please visit our website at dnusd.org/familyresources or the California Department of Public Health at cdph.ca.gov.

Finally, I’d like to end with some great news about a new resource that we have available to our community.  For the past several months, we have been working on a new website, Connect Del Norte.  Connect Del Norte is an all in one portal to assist everyone in our community.  The website is arranged around four basic areas: education, families, health, and careers, and includes information and contacts for over 200 community partners.  The site is searchable and will be especially helpful to those new to our community or those facing new challenges brought on by our current situation.

Superintendent Jeff Harris has a special message for the community.

-Students return to school from Winter Break on Monday, January 4th

-For families traveling or hosting family members from outside of our area, we encourage you to consider requesting an independent study contract that covers up to two weeks of in-person learning following your return to town or your guest's departure. This would allow time for families and students to monitor for COVID-19 symptoms or to be tested for COVID prior to returning to school.

  • Hands, Face, Space, and Home

Hi, my name is Angela Greenough and I am a member of the Board of Trustees for Del Norte Unified School District.  As we look forward to the holidays and beginning the next year, we need your help.  There are many perspectives on COVID-19 in our community, but together, we can work to help keep our schools, businesses, and community open.

Regardless of your holiday plans, I ask that you remember the following steps that we can take to keep our schools, businesses, and our community open - Hands, face, space, and home.

Make sure to wash, wear your mask, physically distance, when necessary, and stay home if you’re sick or directed to by your healthcare provider or by your Public Health official.

Also, if you do travel out of the area or host visitors from out of the area and you have children in our schools, we ask that if possible keep your children home for 14 days after you travel or your guests leave.  You may request an independent study packet for any of the days of school your children missed, ask your teacher, or visit dnusd.org for more information.

It’s in everyone’s interest, working together, to help keep Del Norte Open.  Remember - Hands, Face Space, and Home.

This not forever, just for now.

  • Hands, Face, Space, and Home - Help Keep Del Norte Open

There are many perspectives on COVID-19 in our community, but we must ask that we all work together, in order to keep our schools open.

Schools in California are subject to state and local law and Public Health mandates. In order for our schools to remain open, we must meet those requirements set forth by those institutions.

That is why we also ask that you remember the following:
    Hands, Face, Space, and Home
Wash your hands, wear your mask, when required, physically distance, and stay at home if you’re sick.

If you travel out of the area or host visitors from out of the area and have children in Del Norte Schools, the District asks that you keep your children home for 14 days after you return from travel or your guests leave. We recommend that you request independent study for any school days that your child may miss.

    It’s in everyone’s interest, to help #KeepDNopen.

Remember - Hands, Face, Space, and Home

    This is #notforeverjustfornow

  • Superintendent's Message to the Community 12-15-2020

Superintendent Jeff Harris has a special message for the community.

-This year winter break is from December 21st to January 1st, and all students will return to school as they currently are on January 4.

-On December 10, the Board of Trustees adopted the Del Norte High School in-person expansion plan as proposed by Principal Alison Eckart. This plan was created with input by parents, students, and DNHS staff and details of the plan are still being finalized. The plan is scheduled to go into effect on January 25th, the first day of 2nd semester. The adopted plan and a summary of stakeholder input can be found along with this update. More detailed information on this plan will be released after Winter Break, so expect to hear from Principal Eckart.

    Proposed Plans / Schedules - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1M7TKzLKd07dTUf1G_i5xqLffv3SI20q9/view?usp=sharing

-Over the next weeks and months, we also want you to be aware of a community-wide campaign with the words hands, face, space, and home.

-For families traveling or hosting family members from outside of our area, we encourage you to consider requesting an independent study contract that covers up to two weeks of in-person learning following your return to town or your guest's departure. This would still allow your child to participate with their teacher and other classmates virtually but would also allow time for families and students to monitor for COVID-19 symptoms or to be tested for COVID prior to returning to school.

-There are only three reasons that our schools would close - executive or public health order, staff or student infection rates within schools, or quarantines so widespread that we do not have enough staff to allow our schools to function.

-DNUSD is looking for subs, please call us at (707)464-6141 if you are interested

For more information on all of the steps you can take to help ensure that classrooms and schools remain open, please visit our website at dnusd.org/familyresources or the California Department of Public Health at cdph.ca.gov.

  • Visits with Mrs. Claus and Sugar Plum Mary

Dear Students at Del Norte Unified School District,

Merry Christmas! Allow me to introduce myself to you. I am Sugarplum Mary, one of Santa’s most trusted elves here at the North Pole. In fact, I have one of the best jobs in Santa’s Village. I am the elf in charge of Santa’s Sweet Treats Division, and I am the personal assistant to Mrs. Claus. I work with Mrs. Claus every day making all types of Christmas cookies, candies, and special treats for Santa, and for the reindeer and all the elves who work so hard in Santa’s North Pole village.

Christmas is a wonderful time of year, and this year we begin the holiday season with a book reading from our very own Mrs. Claus.

  • COVID-19 TESTING INFORMATION AND UPDATES

During the Wednesday webinar on 12/2/20, Superintendent Jeff Harris had a discussion with Del Norte County Public Health Officer, Dr. Warren Rehwaldt, regarding current and future testing opportunities within Del Norte County.  Testing by Verily is currently available through public health at two locations, the Crescent City Cultural Center and the Holiday Inn Express/Redwood Hotel in Klamath.  Testing at these sites is for those ages 13 and older.  Testing is by appointment only.  The Cultural Center is open for testing on Monday and Tuesday, and the hotel location is open on Wednesday.  For more information, or to make an appointment, please visit https://www.covid19.dnco.org/testing.  Additional testing is available at Sutter Coast Urgent Care Clinic, CVS Pharmacy, and through other healthcare providers.

Del Norte County Public Health is also working closely with Humboldt County Public Health to expand testing availability through our two counties.  Testing will be done by United Indian Health Services (UIHS) and is expected to be in place by mid-December.  In October, Dr. Rehwaldt reached out to Del Norte Unified and asked if we could assist this effort by providing a location at a few schools for testing.  We have been working with the County of Del Norte to ensure that testing is done after students leave for the regular school day, that testing is walk up or drive up, that testing is done outside of spaces used by students and staff, that UIHS staff disinfects any district facility that is used by UIHS staff, and that those seeking testing do not travel through the school site.

All testing will be done between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. and no testing will occur within the school building or near students or staff.  The tentative testing schedule is:

    Monday- Crescent Elk

    Tuesday- Margaret Keating

    Wednesday- Redwood

    Friday- Smith River

    Sunday- Mountain School

This increased testing will be available to the community, and more information, including a final schedule, will be provided by the Public Health Officer when the sites are open for testing.

Please note that contrary to information being placed on social media, testing is not being provided by the District, administered by the District, or mandated by the District, nor is the District receiving any compensation for allowing UIHS and Del Norte Public Health to use the agreed-upon locations.

  • DNUSD In-Person & Distance Learning K-8 Survey

    Survey Links:

PLEASE NOTE: This survey is to gather information and is not a guarantee of placement.

We are approaching the halfway point of this very different 2020-2021 school year at Del Norte Unified. When we started with our In-Person and Distance Learning models of instruction in early October we stated that students in full Distance Learning may have the ability to return to In-Person instruction after the winter break. This survey is to help the District determine which students may be interested in returning to our cohort-based (Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday) In-Person instructional model, or move from In-Person to Distance Learning. We are asking ALL TK-8 Parents to complete this survey by Monday 11/30 so we can make every effort to adjust staffing levels to accommodate possible changes in these student groups.

If your student is currently attending an In-Person cohort and you are requesting to move to Distance Learning please be aware you will be required to provide a doctor's note verifying that your student meets one of the following criteria:

    1. Student is medically fragile or would be put at risk by in-person instruction, due to an underlying health condition.
    2. A family member is at high risk or has an underlying health condition.

However, if your student is already attending via Distance Learning then no new documentation will be required.

Please complete one survey for each TK-8 student that is attending a Del Norte Unified School, not including Castle Rock or Uncharted Shores Academy.

REMINDER: This survey is to gather information and is not a guarantee of placement.

    DNUSD Parent Webinar - October 20th @ 6:00 PM

Cheryl Simons, MA, MFT is a California-licensed marriage, family, and child therapist who has maintained a private psychotherapy practice in Crescent City, California for the past 25 years.  Cheryl began her career with a focus on Jungian therapy and a passion for working with children and families.  Her discovery of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in 1998, added to a growing realization that having the ability to work with one’s emotions was a key to a good life and to good mental health.  DBT’s “skills deficit” model, which posits that, at the root of many mental health issues, is a simple lack of skills, helped Cheryl more clearly conceptualize and articulate her own thinking developed through years of experience.  Using the DBT model, Cheryl created and led Emotion Education Groups for boys aged 6 – 12 years.  Many of the techniques Cheryl teaches were tested and developed during these groups.  Cheryl has given talks on various topics in the field of psychotherapy for 18 years and on Emotion Education since 2009.

  • Dear Del Norte Unified Families and County Residents,

Del Norte Public Health and the Del Norte Unified School District were notified today of two positive cases of students with COVID-19, one at Crescent Elk Middle School and one at Smith River School, both in the Monday/Wednesday cohorts. In both cases, we had been previously notified of close contacts, and the two students were quarantined at that time to avoid any further exposure to other students or staff.

In neither case did the students contract COVID-19 at school.

The occurrence of positive cases means that the following steps will be put into place immediately:

Public Health, with cooperation of the District, will begin contact tracing.

-All affected students and staff, in the two cohorts only, will be placed on quarantine for 14 calendar days. Schools will notify those families regarding how to access school by distance learning.

-The District will work with the schools to clean and disinfect the classrooms, per California Department of Public Health and CDC guidelines, and in accordance with the District Epidemic/Pandemic Safety Plan.

-Based on contact tracing by Public Health, any other students or staff who were in close contact with the positive cases may be quarantined.

-COVID-19 testing will most likely be recommended for all quarantined students and staff, and they should contact their local healthcare provider or follow directions from Public Health when contacted.

At this time, no school closures are recommended. Individual school closure is recommended based on the number of cases, the percentage of the teacher/students/staff that are positive for COVID-19, in consultation with our county Public Health department. Individual school closure may be appropriate when there are multiple cases in multiple cohorts at a school or when at least 5 percent of the total number of teachers/student/staff are cases within a 14-day period, depending on the size and physical layout of the school.

Public Health and the District have been and will continue to work closely together to help our schools and community remain healthy and safe. Please remember that this is why our schools are implementing cohorts and why the wearing of face coverings, physical distancing, and hand washing or sanitizing are so important.

As Dr. Rehwaldt has stated many times, we will not be able to stop the virus or ensure that no one contracts it, but we can minimize exposure, slow the spread, and continue to take a slow, methodical, and thoughtful approach to students returning to school.

Thank you for helping to ensure the health and wellness of everyone in our community.

    Sincerely,
Warren Rehwaldt, MD, Public Health Officer
    Jeff Harris, Superintendent

  • Good afternoon,

We are making some changes to our video conferencing tool, Zoom, in order to provide an even higher level of security for our students and staff. Effective tomorrow, Friday, September 18, all students will need to authenticate to their DNCOE Zoom account using the Single Sign-On (SSO) option with their District-provided @mydnschools.org email address. When your students attempt to join their Zoom classes they may now be prompted to log in - make sure they type in "DNCOE" for the domain, then they'll be directed to authenticate using their existing student email address and password.

As always our IT Department is here to help. Should you experience any issues please call our Family Support Hotline at 707-464-7005. • Superintendent's Message to the Community 9-14-2020

    • DNUSD wants to thank Frontier Communications and the California Emerging Technology Fund for providing 200 devices to our 6th-grade students at Crescent Elk.
    • DNUSD is planning on providing the community with as accurate of a timeline as we possibly can for students returning to school in phases 2 & 3. These timelines heavily depend on materials and supplies arriving for safety and sanitation. We will be issuing more communications as soon as possible regarding this issue.

  • Superintendent's Special Message to the Community 9-11-2020

As you know, in August, the Board approved a gradual return to in-person learning that would have moved us into Phase 2 this next Monday, September 14. Phase 2 consists of continued distance learning for all students with groups not to exceed 14 students returning for in-person instruction and/or support. Students included in these first groups to return are those receiving intensive special education services and those students most at-risk, including foster youth, homeless youth, English learners, high school students who are significantly credit deficient, and students with no internet access.
To safely and effectively move into Phase 2, the District needs to have personal protective equipment, disinfecting supplies, and family screening tools available. We currently have most of the PPE needed to begin working in person with students. Our Facilities and Maintenance department began ordering supplies in April and May, but as of this week, we have still not received critical supplies, including disinfecting spray and disinfecting wipes for every classroom. Now fires and road closures are further impacting our ability to get supplies. In addition, we will need every family to screen their child at home prior to sending them to school. We have a very simple, easy app to assist our families in this process. Unfortunately, we have had difficulty in working with the company providing the app. It was originally supposed to be available on Monday, August 31, but we are now told that it will most likely be closer to September 18.
We will be moving the tentative date to begin bringing students back in person in Phase 2 to September 21, but our goal remains to open Phase 3 by October 5. Over the next week, families will be contacted to set up these small groups and to provide information regarding transportation, cohort times, safety protocols, etc. We will also be hosting two family training events on universal precautions and student safety: Wednesday, September 16 at 5:00 p.m. and Thursday, September 17 at 9:00 a.m. We will be recording the Wednesday session and posting it by Thursday afternoon for families to view at their convenience. We will also be working to provide the same information in Hmong and Spanish. A mailer will be sent home with information regarding universal precautions and how to safely re-enter school.
I’d like to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation as our staff continues to overcome challenges and obstacles and strives to ensure that each child receives the best education possible in the current situation.

  • We are planning on opening school tomorrow, calmer winds, and shifting weather patterns may move the fire away from Gasquet as well as reduce smoke and particles in Del Norte. If there is any change in school opening tomorrow, we will send an all call, post on our website, and on our additional communication channels.

Any students that are displaced and unable to attend school tomorrow, their absence will be excused.

Mountain Elementary School will remain closed, students at Moutain school that are not displaced can still do school work through Seesaw, Google Classroom, and email.

  • Student Zoom Issues 8-31-2020

As you know, today was our first day of virtual learning, and most of the issues that we dealt with had to do with devices or supporting students in logging into their classrooms. We did, however, have one instance of a student sharing inappropriate images from their personal cell phone, through their webcam, to an online classroom. All district computers operate under the same filtering system and are as safe as using computers at school. We take such disruptions seriously and are investigating the situation. We will take all necessary and appropriate disciplinary action. We are also in the process of adding an additional layer of security into our Zoom environment. This will limit Zoom use only to those within the district’s email domains and eliminate any outside participants, which means that students will have to use their school email addresses to join all Zoom meetings.

Contrary to what may have been shared on social media, our system was not hacked or hijacked. As of now, we have been told and believe that this was an isolated incident. Our goal is to have virtual school as safe as in-person school.

  • Devices, Internet Access, and the First Day of School

Tomorrow, 8/31/2020 is the first day of school for district students, and as a friendly reminder school will begin in distance learning. Del Norte Unified School District has distributed over 2200 student devices throughout the county and has had up to 1000 devices on order since the spring, but we are still 400 devices short for our students. As student devices continue to arrive they will be set up by our IT department and distributed by school sites immediately.

DNUSD Parent Tech Hotline: (707) 464-7005

Parent Tech Support Email - parenthelp@dnusd.org

We understand that not all students will have access to a device, or even the internet. If you are one of those affected families, here is some information that may be helpful:

-If you have no device or internet access and need a paper packet, please contact your school site principal

-Not all students will have school-issued devices on the first day of school, but any device in a child’s home may be used temporarily to attend class (computer, Chromebook, tablet, phone, landline phone)

-Free and reduced-cost internet, along with deals on devices provided from various vendors can be found at dnusd.org/families (DNUSD.org/families is in the process of being revamped today, and may appear under construction throughout the day 8/30/2020, check back by 6 PM)

-If a household does not have a device, but they have access to a phone, they can call into their child’s class zoom session, contact your school site for more information

-The Zoom app can be downloaded on a smartphone to be used during synchronous learning sessions

    Additional Information

-Devices have been on order since March and April

-We have 1000 devices currently on order

-2200 devices have been distributed to students

-Wireless access points for school parking lots where families can connect for internet access are on order and will be available soon.

-We hoped to be able to meet student device needs by pushing school back a week, but we will still be short 400 student devices on the first day of school. As we get more devices they will be distributed to students.

If you have any questions or concerns please email communications@dnusd.org

  • DNUSD Schools to Begin in Distance Learning

As you are all aware, the ability of the District to bring students back into our classrooms is based on Executives Orders by Governor Newsom, guidance and letters from the California Department of Public Health, and guidance from Cal OSHA.  The Del Norte County Unified Board of Trustees met yesterday from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. to discuss one item:  how to reopen school this year.  During this special board meeting, the school board heard the recommendation for school reopening, based on state guidance*, the District's ability to implement that guidance, and the need to involve parents and staff in complex problem solving, listened to parents, staff, and community members for almost two hours of public comment, and ultimately took action to direct that school** will begin as follows:
    • Phase 1 through September 11, 2020, for All
    • Phase 2 through October 2, 2020, for All
    • Phase 3 beginning October 5, 2020, for K-8, and Phase 2 for DNHS
    * Transition between these phases would require that the County of Del Norte is not on the State watch list at the time of transition and that the transition is supported by the local public health officer based on COVID-19 epidemiological data, as required by CDPH.

**Del Norte Community School and Castle Rock are not included in this plan

For more information on learning options in Del Norte county, please visit www.dnusd.org/learningoptions.

Our schools will, in all likelihood, continue to transition between phases throughout the year, in response to data surrounding COVID-19 and State directive.  Our goal is and will continue to be to maximize student learning and wellness to the greatest extent possible, regardless of the phase of learning.

  • Distance Learning Registration / In-School Schedule Request Form

We are asking that all parents fill out one of the following forms, one if you plan to pursue 100% distance learning for your child, or the other if you plan on your child being physically in school as part of the blended learning model.

    In-School Student Schedule Request Form

After reviewing the surveys, talking with staff and parents, and discussing the impact on operations, the planning for Phase 3 model will reflect:  Cohort A (50% of students) attending on Monday & Wednesday, Cohort B (the remaining 50%) attending on Tuesday & Thursday, and all students engaging in distance learning on Friday and on the days that they are not physically in school.

  • School Board Approves Phase 3 Plan - 2 Days In School, 3 Days at Home Per Week

Since late May/early June, certificated, classified, and administrative staff, along with students, parents, and community members have been providing input on re-opening options for schools.  There have been multiple meetings at school sites (prior to the end of the year), steering committee meetings, Board meetings, surveys, etc. to discuss data and make recommendations.  We also know that our current situation with COVID-19 is very fluid.  As a result, we developed a "Continuum of Educational Phases" for the 2020-2021 school year (attached to this email).  In this continuum, we link what school may look like with the California Resiliency Roadmap.  In the continuum, you'll see that our educational programs this coming year could vary, at any time, between full distance and full in-person, depending on orders from the Governor, and guidance/mandates from California Department of Public Health, California Department of Education, and the Del Norte County Public Health Officer.

Given the information that we currently have, we anticipate that school will most likely begin in Phase 3- Blended Learning.  Last night the Board took action to approve a general model for Phase 3, which was to provide 2 days per week of in-person learning for all K-8 students, who attend schools within the Del Norte County USD, and 3 days per week of distance learning for all K-8 students in DNCUSD.  This does not include Castle Rock, Community, or Elk Creek.  The Board also allowed high schools to work with families, students, and staff to develop a model that works for their unique needs.

What the Board did not do was to determine what the start of school would be.  Given the quickly changing COVID-19 landscape, some districts set for full re-open have now completely closed and others set for full or partial closure have completely re-opened.  We will work with our local public health officer, rely on legal requirements and mandates, and ultimately, make a final decision on which phase we will utilize when school re-opens.  I anticipate the final re-opening phase decision will be made no later than the first week of August.  It is important to know, too, that the district will be offering a full year, distance learning option for families whose children cannot attend in person due to COVID-19 reasons

Over the next three weeks, we will work with both bargaining units, interested staff, parents, students, site administrators, Board members, and others to plan for, negotiate, and implement a safe and successful Phase 3 potential re-opening.

Thank you, all, for your suggestions, ideas, and patience, as we all navigate these new waters.
