Hello, Bess Maxwell community! It is an exciting new year and we wanted to share a few new things at Bess.

Our new STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art & math) lab is now open for student use. The lab has equipment for science and art exploration, lab safety equipment, and includes dedicated work-stations for student use. The school wants to thank Mrs. Denise Doyle-Schnacker and Mrs. Danyelle Ramsey for ordering supplies and organizing the space, and also Ms. Jean Graves for doing some trial use attempts with students to see how well the lab operates. During the coming years, we look forward to continuing to develop the Bess Maxwell STEAM room and helping our students and teachers embrace the learning of the Next Generation Science Standards that will be necessary for the workforce of the future.

Also, new this year, our Kids First after-school program is currently developing a student-led newsletter for Bess Maxwell. This monthly newsletter will contain important information for families, students, and staff, as well as student-written articles about current events and developments around the school. Our students are excited to be embarking on this adventure and the school wishes to thank Mrs. Denise Doyle- Schnacker for her leadership and vision in making this a reality.

Lastly, as many in our community already know, students in Del Norte County had the opportunity recently to participate in the One Sight vision testing program. On Tuesday, September 24, approximately 70 students from Bess Maxwell were bused to Elk Valley Rancheria offices, where they participated in the One Sight vision testing. In the days following, many of our students received their first pair of glasses at no cost from the One Sight team. Bess Maxwell School would like to thank the Yurok Tribe, the One Sight organization, the Walking Shield organization, the Elk Valley Rancheria and the Del Norte Unified School District for organizing this event. We also want to thank Mrs. Denise Doyle-Schnacker and Mrs. jean Graves for accompanying our students to the event. Our students and families are appreciative of the work and collaboration done to make this happen.
