Update to the Community 3/11/24

Good afternoon. I’m Jeff Harris, Superintendent of Schools for Del Norte County. This is the update for the week of March 11th.

Important Dates to Remember

I want to start by reminding everyone that this week schools are holding parent-teacher conferences for all K-8 students.  This means that every day this week is a minimum day for all K-8 schools.  Remember, too, that March 25th - April 1 is Spring Break, so there will be no school on those days.

Pre-Kindergarten Parent Information Day

We are also gearing up for a pre-kindergarten parent information day.  If you are the parent of a child who turns 5 between September 2nd, 2024, and June 2nd, 2025, we encourage you to join us for our Pre-Kindergarten Parent Information Day on Wednesday, March 20th, at 400 W Harding Ave., Crescent City. During this event, we’ll dive into the essentials of Transitional Kindergarten (TK) for the coming school year. The event will have three identical sessions: 9:00-10:00 am, 12:00-1:00 pm, and 5:00-6:00 pm, to accommodate families with differing schedules. Once again, we encourage you to attend if you have a child going into TK.  We want to help you ensure that you will have everything you need to prepare your child for this exciting time in their educational journey. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at communications@dnusd.org or call our Curriculum and Instruction department at 707-464-0763.

Del Norte Scholarship Foundation

On the other end of school, the clock is ticking for high school seniors! Your window to apply for the Del Norte Scholarship Foundation’s awards is quickly closing. Applications for this amazing opportunity are due by 12:00 noon on Friday, March 22, 2024, which is only two weeks away. Every year, the Del Norte Scholarship Foundation, in partnership with local businesses and organizations, works with the District to distribute hundreds of thousands of dollars in college scholarship awards to students in Del Norte. This event gives many students who otherwise would not have the chance to be able to attend college. You can get an application in the counseling office at Del Norte High or by visiting dnhigh.org. Act now so you don’t miss out.

Expanded Learning Summer Program

It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year again, registration for our Expanded Learning Summer Program is officially open! The program is for students TK-6th grade, with sessions throughout July and August, offering a variety of academic enrichment opportunities for students. To register, or see the session details, visit dnusd.org/asp and click on “Expanded Learning Summer Program” on the menu, or check with your child’s school office for a registration packet. The deadline for registration is April 2nd at 4 PM. This program fills up quickly, if you are hoping to reserve a spot, please submit your registration as soon as you are able. There will be separate summer programs available for our students in grades 7-12, we are still working out a few details and will be updating the community soon on how they can register for those programs, so please stay posted.

This week is, once again, full of sports at Del Norte High School!

On Monday, our JV Softball team is hitting the road for a doubleheader against Hoopa High, with games starting at 2:00 PM. Then, on Tuesday, the Boys’ Tennis team will be hosting Eureka at 3:30 PM here at Del Norte High.

Saturday is jam-packed with matches. Our Boys’ Tennis team is back on home turf, facing off against St. Bernard’s at 10:00 AM. Simultaneously, JV Baseball takes on Brookings in a doubleheader starting at 11:00 AM at Del Norte High, and JV Softball heads to Brookings High for another doubleheader, with games starting at 1:00 PM.

I also want to wish luck to our Varsity Baseball and Softball teams who will be competing in tournaments on Friday and Saturday, with baseball in Yreka and softball in Anderson.

That's all for now. We will see you next Monday.

Thank you
