Update to the Community 3-18-2024

Good Afternoon, this is the update for the week of March 18th.

Important Dates to Remember

I want to start by reminding everyone that next week, Monday, March 25th, through Monday, April 1st is Spring Break, and there will be no school. We will see you back at school on Tuesday, April 2nd. You can find our academic calendar at dnusd.org/calendars.

Del Norte County Spelling Bee Results.

Last week, students across Del Norte County participated in the annual spelling bee, showcasing their spelling skills. The competition was tough, but several students distinguished themselves by claiming the top honors in their respective grades. In 2nd grade, Arabella Lanum of Bess Maxwell earned first place, while Aubrey Pena clenched 3rd grade from Mary Peacock. Jacob Neibert from Smith River led the 4th grade, Sequoia Corpstein of Joe Hamilton captured first place for 5th grade, and Jacob Woods from Crescent Elk was the 6th grade champion. In the 7th grade category, Michael Mavris from Crescent Elk came out on top, with Benjamin Wilder from Mountain taking the lead in the 8th grade. We want to give a big congratulations to these students for their outstanding performances. For a complete list of the top three winners in each grade, visit the dnusd.org homepage and click on “Headlines and Features.”

GOAL Program

As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, it's the perfect time to explore the incredible opportunities offered by the Greater Outdoor Accessibility and Learning (GOAL) Program. Whether you're drawn to the thrill of white water rafting on the Smith River, eager for biking tours amidst towering redwoods, or ready to hike along our scenic coastline, the GOAL Program has something for everyone, including families. What makes these adventures even more remarkable is that they're completely free. Thanks to grant funding, the GOAL Program covers all costs, allowing attendees to enjoy these experiences guided by local outdoor professionals dedicated to serving the Del Norte community. You can find more information on the program by visiting goaldn.com.

LCAP Community Input Session

We also have an LCAP Community Input Session this Tuesday, at 5:30 PM. This is an in-person LCAP meeting at Margaret Keating Elementary School, there will be food, and we encourage anyone who is interested in sharing their thoughts on how the district can improve educational outcomes for students to attend. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the LCAP, it is the Local Accountability and Control Plan. This plan is required by the state in order for the District and County Office of Education to identify how funds are used to support the educational outcomes of English Learners, students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and students who are receiving Homeless and Foster Youth Services. For more information on the LCAP, you can visit dnusd.org/lcap.
