Update to the Community 3/13/2023
Good afternoon. I’m Jeff Harris, the Superintendent of Schools for Del Norte County, and this is the update for Monday, March 13th.
Dates to Remember
I want to remind everyone that all K-8 schools will host parent/teacher conferences this week, beginning tomorrow, March 14th, and continuing through the end of the week, Friday, the 17th. Every day this week is a minimum day. Please contact your child’s school to schedule a meeting with your child’s teacher if you would like to meet but haven’t already been provided with an appointment.
Kamome Festival
On Friday, April 14th, our community will be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the landing of the Rikuzentakata High School fishing boat, Kamome, which marks the beginning of our student exchanges and ultimately the establishment of our sister city relationship with Rikuzentaka. The public is invited to attend the first Kamome Festival at Crescent City’s Cultural Center, a one-day event highlighting tsunami and earthquake preparedness and engaging children and families in Japanese cultural activities. Activities range from origami and card making for students in Rikuzentakata to an interactive tsunami trail. Students from around the county will be attending the event.
Native American Studies Model Curriculum - Listening Sessions
This Thursday, March 16th at 6 PM, I’d like to invite parents, educators, and those who work with native youth, to come join us for the Native American Studies Model Curriculum (NASMC) listening sessions at the District Office, located at 301 W. Washington Blvd., next to the football field, here in Crescent City. During these sessions, participants will learn about the program's goals, potential outcomes, and provide feedback on the curriculum and educational resources that will be presented. We hope to see you there.
Performing Arts Center Podcast - Coffee and Conversation
Last week on the Coffee and Conversation Podcast I was joined by Nick and Lisa Rail, local philanthropists who are advocating the importance of music in the lives of youth in Del Norte County and the construction of the performing arts center in our community, and Dan Sedgwick, music teacher at Del Norte High. We discussed performing arts within the district and the importance of and progress on the Performing Arts Center construction project. It was a great time and very informative, I encourage everyone who is interested to go listen to the latest updates for the project. You can download the podcast at dnsud.org/podcast.
DNHS Sports Update
Finally, due to the past few weeks of winter weather, we have had several last-minute cancellations and rescheduling of our DNHS sporting events. This week could very well be the same, so I want to take the opportunity to say thanks to all of our Del Norte Warriors fans out there for your patience. Whether you are out on the sidelines or enjoying the live streams of our home games, you can stay up to date on all of our upcoming Del Norte High Athletic events by visiting dnusd.org/sports.
That's all for this week's update. Have a great rest of your week.
Thank you!
