Update to the Community 4/10/2023
Good afternoon. I’m Jeff Harris, the Superintendent of Schools for Del Norte County, and this is the update for Monday, April 10th.
Dates to Remember
I want to start the update by reminding everyone that this week’s school board meeting will take place at Smith River Elementary School, and the open session begins at 4:30. For the meeting agenda, please visit dnusd.org.
E3 Summer Youth Program - Signups are Open
It’s time again for E3, the annual youth education, experience and employment event hosted by the Del Norte County Office of Education and the Del Norte Workforce Center. E3 is a summer work-based learning program for incoming high school juniors and seniors, as well as recent high school graduates. The first week of the E3 program takes place from June 19th to June 23rd at the ERC on Harding Ave. During the first week of the event, students will participate in a boot camp where they will earn certifications in areas like "Work Readiness," "Introduction to OSHA," and "Blood Borne Pathogens Awareness." Along with these certifications, students will receive training in employment and employability skills, soft skills, and interviewing techniques. At the end of the week, students will have the opportunity to be interviewed for paid internships with participating employers. In the weeks following the training, students will spend time working for their matched employer, earn some summer pay and high school elective credit, and build their resume. To register for, please fill out the E3 interest form at dnusd.org/e3 or call 707-464-0380 for more information.
Kamome Festival
This Friday, April 14th, our community will mark the 10-year anniversary of the landing of the Rikuzentakata High School fishing boat, Kamome, on South Beach. This event led to the start of our student exchange program and the establishment of our sister city relationship with Rikuzentakata. To celebrate this occasion, the first Kamome Festival will be held at Crescent City's Cultural Center, featuring student activities designed to promote tsunami and earthquake preparedness while also engaging children and families in Japanese cultural activities. The festival includes activities, such as origami and card-making for students in Rikuzentakata, as well as an interactive tsunami trail. Students from throughout the county will be attending the event, and the public is welcome to join in the festivities.
GOAL Passport to History
It’s time for another GOAL activity. GOAL stands for Greater Outdoor Access and Learning. On Saturday, April 15, you are invited to attend our upcoming field experience exploring cultural and historical sites in Del Norte County. Students, families, and community members will receive a Passport to History and earn stamps in their GOAL passports by visiting each site. The tour starts at the Del Norte Historical Society and moves on to one of the five zones in the county. Transportation is included. If you're interested in attending, please contact the GOAL program coordinator either by visiting goaldn.com or by calling 707-464-0943.
Drone League Competition
This Wednesday, April 12th, at 4 PM, we have the Drone League Competition at the Del Norte High main gym. Many of our students will compete against Orange Unified School District in space exploration-themed competitions. If you want to watch the event, it will be live-streamed at DNCOE.org.
DNUSD Spelling Bee Champion
Last Thursday at Crescent Elk Middle School, students from across Del Norte County gathered to compete in the annual spelling bee. It was an amazing night that showcased our student's sportsmanship and literary skills. The 1st place champions are as follows:
2nd grade - Valerie Reyes Cordero from Smith River
3rd grade - Jacob Neibert from Joe Hamilton
4th grade - Sequoia Corpstein from Joe Hamilton
5th grade - Jacob Woods from Mary Peacock
6th grade - Kayla Neibert from Crescent Elk
7th grade - Rowan Yates from Crescent Elk
8th grade - Uriah Lee from Smith River
Uriah Lee and Kayla Neibert will go on to represent Del Norte County at the state Spelling Bee in Stockton next month, so if you see them wish them luck.
DNHS Sports Update
We have a light week in Del Norte High sports. On Friday the 14th, the Warriors Track and Field team will be hosting a meet at DNHS, starting at 4:00 pm. The Warriors Varsity Baseball team will be away at a tournament in Redding starting on Tuesday the 11th and the Golf team will be playing in Grants Pass at Dutcher Creek Golf Course. For more information on all DNHS athletic events, you can check out our athletics calendars at dnusd.org/sports.
That's all for this week's update. Have a great rest of your week.
Thank you!
