Update to the Community 5/15/2023

Good afternoon. I’m Jeff Harris, the Superintendent of Schools for Del Norte County, and this is the update for Monday, May 15th.

Dates to Remember

As of today, we’re about ½ of the way through Educator Appreciation Month.  Over the past two weeks, local and statewide principals, teachers, and nutrition services staff have been recognized for their contributions to education, and in the upcoming weeks, we’ll be recognizing classified staff.  If you know an educator, be sure to say “Thank You” for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to our youth.

For those interested, tomorrow, Tuesday, May 16th at 4:00 pm, is a Personnel Commission Special Meeting. The agenda for this meeting can be found at dnusd.org/agenda.

Finally, I want to remind you to mark your calendars for Monday, May 29th, as there will be no school in observance of Memorial Day.

Light Through the Struggle - DNHS Spring Dance Concert

I also have some upcoming high school events to share with you. First, the Spring Dance concert, "Light Through the Struggle," will take place on May 18th, 19th, and 20th at 7:00 PM at the Crescent Elk Auditorium. This is a great opportunity to support our students. Adult tickets are $12.00 at the door, or $10.00 if purchased during the pre-sale, while students and seniors pay only $5.00. Children under 5 get in for free, and pre-sale tickets are available now at Del Norte Office Supply.

May We Dance - DNHS Jazz Band Performance

On Sunday, May 21st, the Del Norte High School Jazz Band is bringing a unique musical experience to the Veterans Memorial Building, located at 810 H St, in Crescent City. The DNHS Music Jazz Bands and Jazz Combos will be featured, showcasing their musical talents and promising a great evening of entertainment.

Tiny House Auction

Finally, Del Norte High School's second tiny house auction is just around the corner! This silent auction will run from June 2nd until June 9th at noon. If you're interested in checking out the tiny house before bidding, join us for open house tours on June 3rd and 4th from noon to 3. The construction class at Del Norte High has worked throughout the year to create this unique tiny house, and all proceeds will go back to the CTE program to fund the next tiny home build.  More information will be coming soon, so plan on taking advantage of this exciting opportunity to own a tiny house and support our high school career and technical education programs!

Sports Update

The Del Norte High Varsity Baseball team is going into the first round of the NCS D4 Playoffs against Fort Bragg on Wednesday, May 17th at 5:00 PM. The game will be at Del Norte High and tickets may be purchased at https://gofan.co/app/school/CA16672. Cash will not be accepted at the gate, nor will the game be live-streamed due to CIF regulations.

Graduations

It’s hard to believe we’re already approaching the end of the school year, and we are beginning to get questions from families about where they can find information on our end-of-year events.  I want to remind everyone that the dates and times for promotion exercises for preschool, kindergarten, fifth and eighth grades, as well as high school graduations, can be found at dnusd.org/calendars. If you need more details or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s school. They’ll be happy to provide you with all the necessary information to make these special moments as smooth and enjoyable as possible for you and your family.

That’s it for this week’s update. See you next Monday.

Thank you!
