Good afternoon. I’m Jeff Harris, Superintendent of Schools for Del Norte. This is the update for the week of February 5, 2024.
Important Dates to Remember
First of all, I want to make sure that you mark your calendars for the upcoming President's Day weekend. There will be no school on Friday, February 16 or Monday, February 19, as we honor Presidents’ Day and Lincoln’s Birthday, both national holidays. Students will return to school on Tuesday, February 20.
Heroes in Education
I would also like to remind you that we’ve officially opened nominations for our Heroes in Education celebration. This is a great time to show recognition and appreciation for the important work done by our staff to help each student in our community. We know that we have amazing staff throughout our schools and want to make sure that you have the opportunity to recognize them for their important work. Please remember that, when you are nominating employees, we have both classified and certificated employees, in a number of departments, including maintenance and operations, nutrition services, transportation, custodians, and many more. You can submit as many nominations as you would like.
Take a moment to submit a nomination, and let’s celebrate the outstanding Heroes in Education who’ve made a real difference in our community by going to dnusd.org/heroes and completing the nomination form. The deadline for nominations is February 23rd, 2024.
Poetry Out Loud
The Poetry Out Loud County-Wide Competition took place this last Thursday at Crescent Elk Auditorium. We had a great evening enjoying student performances. Six student finalists took to the stage showcasing their talents and recited a wide variety of poetry. This year’s Del Norte County Poetry Out Loud champion is Madalynn Van Vacter. As part of the competition, Madalynn will travel to Sacramento to visit the floor of the state senate to compete with other county champions from across the state. If victorious, Madalynn will travel to the national championship. If you see any of our Poetry Out Loud competitors, be sure to congratulate them on a job well done.
Our regularly scheduled board meetings for the County and District are this Thursday, February 8th. The board meeting for the County Office of Education begins at 3:00 PM. At 3:30 PM the District board meeting begins with closed session before convening to open session at 4:30 PM. If you are unable to attend these meetings in-person at the district office, tune-in to the livestream on the front page of dnusd.org or join the zoom. You can find the agenda and the link for the zoom meeting at dnusd.org/agenda.
LCAP Community Input Session
We also have an LCAP Community Input Session this Wednesday at 6 PM. This meeting can be attended through Zoom, and we encourage anyone who is interested in sharing their thoughts on how the district can improve educational outcomes for students to attend these meetings. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the LCAP, it is the Local Accountability and Control Plan. This plan is required by the state in order for the District and County Office of Education to identify how funds are used for supporting the educational outcomes of English Learners, students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged and for students who are receiving Homeless and Foster Youth services. For more information on the LCAP, and for the zoom link for the meeting this Wednesday, you can visit dnusd.org/lcap.
There’s a bit of a break in DNHS sports action this week. I just want to say congratulations to our Boys and Girls basketball teams at Del Norte High for an epic season – you've made us proud, Warriors! While basketball has come to a close, our wrestlers are still going full throttle. This Saturday, our boys’, JV and varsity, and girls’ wrestling teams will be competing at Eureka High for the HDN Championship.
Don’t forget! Spring sports are on the horizon and you can stay informed by hitting up our athletics page at dnusd.org/sports.
